He noticed the pain first, light behind his eyelids causing his head to pulse and pound with the beating of his heart. He groaned as he roused, forcing himself to sit up and grab hold of his temples between his thumb and middle finger, massaging them briefly before he opened his eyes. He was astonished to realize that he recognized nothing; not the rubble that surrounded him (it was oddly hot and sizzled when he touched it) or the boy that stood a few feet away in… some sort of armor? Just where was he?
He tried to think, to remember how he had gotten to this place, but with a start he realized that he didn’t remember anything at all. A cold chill fell upon him, his breath picking up a bit as he asked, “Where am I…? Who… am I?“
Glancing down at himself, he saw that he too was wearing armor, though his looked entirely more medieval than the child’s. Black metal gleamed in the sunlight, the blood red of his shirt complimenting it nicely. It looked to have once been a fine set of armor, had it not been rent already. He could see an ugly—rapidly healing?? Holy fuck!—wound upon his abdomen. It looked as though someone had run him through with a sword. They had to have been strong to have broken through his armor like that.
There was blood everywhere—that would explain the monstrous headache and the weakness he felt, assuming it was all his— and his armor was scorched as though he’d just been on fire. Whomever he was, it was clear that he was formidable, or just extremely lucky.
