Envy Those We Cannot Be
This is the first piece of fiction from the Alliroe/Hybridian universe, the last post I made was the second one. --- Her eyes flickered past the trees, the cold ambiance, the chill of the evening fog. Golden eyes watches her.
"What're you thinking about now, Tazz?" She let her vision drop to the grass nearby, leaning her back against the rough bark of the oak tree.
"Oh, you know...choices, lives...those silly little things all those girls get to choose, but we get handed to us, like it or not. Thanks for that, by the way."
A half-smirk, "You're welcome."
She scrunched her face up, "I was being sarcastic."
A huff of breath, "No, really? I had no idea! Not with all the long walks you take in the dead of night to 'clear your head,' ESPECIALLY on the nights when our dimension's drifting perilously close."
"I am allowed to dream, Rakia."
"Tazzia, you dream too much. You need to make something of yourself." She looked upon him. One moment, she saw him as he was; an elegant lion with a burning-wheat mane. Another, she could see the costumed wear of his Hybridian form, flame designs dancing up legs, a mere vest to protect him from the cold. The eyes stayed the same, though. Intelligent, commanding, uncompromising. And, perhaps, a bit childish.
She reached a paw forward, fingertips melding with fur and claw as they twisted between the realities of Aloe and the Village of Lir. She could see the girls talking, in their slightly-askew time. She envied them, all they were, all they could be. They could be human...and not a beast, not like her.
"Tazz, seriously. Snap out of it or I'll take the pebble away."
That made her twitch, "You'll WHAT?"
"You heard me. It's doing nothing but make you dream and waste away, you can't live in Aloe, it's not ours."
"But nor is Lir. I don't belong to either."
He growled in his throat, "You belong here just as Kuma does, you're stable here," his shoulders fell, and he slumped to the ground, looking away, "I don't want to lose you again, Tazzia. You know that."
She whined, cringing tight, "I..."
"I've got to go now, keep safe."
And he was gone. Tazzia fell to the ground, rolling onto her side. She could only feel the dirt through her thick coat. How she missed skin.
"Rakia...at least admit to me that you want to go back, too...give me that much..."
She was always asking too much.
But she had to try.
