those patch things you recommend - do you think they would help with ingrown hairs on a bikini line by chance???
The answer is yes and no, but probably mostly Please No. I had to do some research first, because I’ve never stuck a hydrocolloid in that particular area, but my disaster-scenario brain was sending off flares of unease and I couldn’t articulate why without doing some homework first.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THE FOLLOWING ADVICE AS GOSPEL, I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL AND I DON’T PLAY ONE ON TV
The evidence for hydrocolloids-as-ingrown-treatment is rather thin on the ground and entirely anecdotal. There are a couple reddit stories of them working out for people, but I don’t want to weigh two success stories against one credible, nauseatingly descriptive firsthand account, my unfortunate personal experience of the human microbiome, and a solid grasp of how hydrocolloids actually work.
Why You Might Consider Using A Hydrocolloid In This Sitch:
part of the function of hydrocolloidal dressings involves softening and removing dead and sloughed-off skin cells, in a process called autolytic debridement (DO NOT GOOGLE THIS IF YOU ARE AT ALL SQUEAMISH, I AM NOT KIDDING), so one might lift enough dead skin to free an ingrown hair
Why You Definitely Shouldn’t Put A Hydrocolloid Anywhere Near Your Bikini Line, Holy Shit:
risk of creating more ingrowns because they can’t break skin while sealed under the hydrocolloid
risk of removing a layer of skin before it’s quiiiite ready to go in an area that is already very tender and delicate (owwwwwwww)
risk of sealing in some of your native skin flora under the hydrocolloid and creating Horrific Infection City
risk of of sealing in one of the many sebacious and/or sweat glands that live in the area under the hydrocolloid and creating Horrific Infection City
I would deffo not risk it; the bikini line is a warm, moist area, and staphylococcus is a horrific opportunist. If you’re already in Horrific Infection City, definitely don’t make it worse by sealing it in, jeebus crisp.
Honestly, the best you can do for ingrown hairs anywhere, but especially in your personal southern hemisphere, are warm moist compresses which will soften the skin and open your pores, and regular gentle exfoliation with mild soap. If you’re in the US, you can usually find exfoliating shower gloves in the bath and beauty area of your closest pharmacy for under $5. You get to exfoliate and feel like a Muppet at the same time, it’s a total win!
