Have you ever seen the anime Hyouge Mono? It tells the story of Oda officer Furuta Oribe and I was wondering how accurate it was.
I do not watch the anime, though I read the manga, so pardon if my point of reference might be somewhat different.
The events are mostly accurate, but there are some strange details included, either for laughs or to make a dramatic display for “aesthetics”.
For example, there was one scene where Nobunaga is depicted entering Kyoto riding an elephant. That does not happen. There is also a scene in the manga where Akechi recites a haiku about “Akechi’s wife”, which is a real haiku, composed by famous poet Matsuo Basho some few decades after Akechi’s death.
There are also things that seems really odd, but are actually true. Such as people tumbling over in an avalanche at Azuchi Castle, because the stairways collapsed under all the visitors’ weight. I also have a few other posts that mentioned Hyougemono.
The one thing that comes to mind as being highly questionable is who instigated the Honnouji incident: The depiction is based on a popular conspiracy theory, but I think we cannot prove or disprove it at the moment (I won’t say who it is, for the sake of avoiding spoilers)
