Honestly, I think it's partly due to ableism and horror has a big problem with that. Mostly because people often, or used to, find deformities scary or how do you say... othering? Though I think it's becoming better these days... But by a slasher having a "messed up" face/or a limp/etc. etc. the audience is more likely to be scared or at least shocked by this. Also not seeing someone's face is scarier because of the divide there, you can't see their face and know what they're thinking or feeling, or if they look like you, and you can't find comfort any way there. But because of that, they have to justify slashers covering up their faces so you get scared. So they sprinkle in some facial injuries. Interestingly enough though, I don't think the majority of slasher fans find deformities "offputting" or scary at all. Probably because the majority of slasher fans are LGBT or neurodivergent or disabled themselves so they already feel othered, and therefore find COMFORT in slashers. I'll stop the essay
