What does the word manipulation really mean?

Turns out, it comes from Latin and translates as ‘to use your hand to make something happen on purpose’.

And in this mind-opening video, Igor explains how in today’s culture the word has taken on a more negative meaning and has become associated with making things happen for your benefit, and to someone else’s detriment.

The truth however, is that everyone influences or manipulates at some point in their life…without even realizing it!

Because whenever you have an interaction with another person, you manipulate them.

For example…

When you ask someone for a glass of water.

When you try to help someone achieve a goal.

These are forms of non-negative manipulation.

In the video, you’ll hear Igor talk about how this also applies to hypnosis, and influence.

Because to be an effective hypnotist or public speaker, you need to be influential. But that doesn’t mean you’re manipulating someone negatively! On the contrary, you’re trying to help someone change their life for the better.

Like when someone goes in for hypnosis, they want the hypnotherapist to manipulate them out of having a problem.

So, when you look at it this way, when someone uses the world ‘manipulative’ what they’re really trying to say is that someone is being unethical.

And that’s why it’s important to make the distinction between ethical and unethical manipulation.

Hypnosis Talk: Why Giving Sympathy & Advice Doesn’t Work

OK think about this:

Have you ever tried to give someone advice and it blew up in your face?

In this video Master Hypnotist, Igor Ledochowski asks his hypnosis students to recreate this!

He asks his students, in the hypnotist role, to go straight into advice-giving mode with their partners.

He actually wants them to annoy their practice subject!

After the exercise, he asks the student in the “client” or “subject” role.

“How did you feel the client as you pouring out your heart and then getting advice back?”

The responses?

“Judged.”

“Misunderstood.”

“Attacked!”

(None of which are good therapeutic styles.)

Crazy right?

Then, Igor explores the concept of offering sympathy.

And how it actually disempowers you when you hear it. Or disempowers your hypnotic subject, when you give it.

Hypnosis Talk: Authority Principle & The Power Of Vocabulary

This is an essential concept to know when learning conversational hypnosis:

Our state of mind selects our vocabulary.

You can usually tell how someone is feeling by the words they’ve selected. Which means you have an indication of what’s currently going on inside your subjects head, and how to guide your session.

Especially if you pay attention to the additional nuances.

When it comes to having the authority in order to properly guide a session, the delivery of your language is key. So it’s important to pay attention to your nuances too!!

For example, when you’re switching from a more direct and authoritative style (which is the language of certainty — “do this, and do that”.)

To a language more permissive style, (using language softeners, which is the language of uncertainty) you may have also switched into a more uncertain state of mind.

True authority, delivers a sense of competency within the communication. In this Video Igor explain this concept with specific examples. Watch the video to know how!
