#2998 - Hypocrea / Trichoderma
Bizarrely coloured tiny fungi on a rotting Banksia trunk. Blue-green is weird.
Hypocrea is the sexual reproductive stage of the cosmopolitan soil fungi of the genus Trichoderma, the most prevalent culturable fungi in soils worldwide. Until 1969, it was thought there was a single species, Trichoderma viride, named for the green colour.
Trichoderma form mutualistic endophytic relationships with several plant species, It's possible it protects the host plants by attacking pathogenic fungi - it also causes Green Mold Disease in mushroom cultivation, by parasitising the other fungus. However, it also causes Green Mold Rot in onions.
