“I killed him.” -- @honorsfire
“You were defending yourself and Kya,” Katara said, her voice soft but firm. Her hands glowed a soft blue as she did yet another healing session with Zuko. At this point the healing sessions were probably more for her peace of mind, than actual healing. The horror of just a few days ago still fresh in her mind.
Kya screaming for her mother and grandfather. Zuko’s blood a terrible red across the white snow. How close had her daughter come to having a day exactly like the one that changed Katara’s life forever? How close had Katara come from loosing someone else she loved? From their family being ripped apart.
“I would have done the same,” she said, “To protect Kya, or you,” she said. “I wish she hadn’t had to see it. That violence that young, I ...” tears clouded Katara’s vision as she glanced back at their children. She wanted to gather up her whole family, and keep them safe in her arms. “I was hoping our kids would never have to see that kind of violence but ... I would have done the same,” she said.
Leaning over she pressed her forehead to his chest. “If I had lost you, or we had lost Kya ...” tears slipped down her cheeks as her shoulders shook gently. “I’d have found ever last member of their group and killed them all.”

me absorbing this, thinking about robert and aaron saying goodbye to each other and aaron crumbling in the aftermath:
when Lorde said “all the nights spent off our faces, trying to find these perfect places. what the fuck are perfect places, anyway?” I felt that

Six years and two months and four days. But, who was counting? That was how long Zuko had been held captive by the New Ozai Society and presumed dead. He thought three years from home was long as a boy, but this was a lifetime and a blink all in one breath. He was both the same. Not at all. A group of earthbenders on vacation had found him and heroically took out the Society members. They would be awarded medals. Zuko would don them, but he didn’t know if he’d feel present. He didn’t know if he would feel real. Nothing felt real, even as the sight of his home dock came into view. -- @pureheartedhonor
The decision to finally return home -- for good -- was a hard one. Katara had not become amabassador for the Southern Water Tribe because she wanted to be closer to Zuko, but it was a nice little perk. To sit beside him at meetings, to spend her evenings talking to him. To picture a bright, wide open future where they both could spend the rest of their life together. That future had always ended when they were both old and grey. Then the New Ozai society had ended it before they could even marry.
Grief had eaten her. Still ate her. Even now. Even as as she tried to move on. She had to leave the Fire Nation, years and years she had tried to stay here. To keep fighting for her people, for all people, but it was too much. It was too hard for her. Six years, two months, and four days, and she finally gave in. She’d return home, there was a man there, who kept asking for her hand in marriage. Maybe it would be better than nothing. Pick up the shattered pieces of her heart and try and move on.
She was down at the docks, not because she knew he was returning home. She was down at the docks because her own ship was being loaded to carry her back home. Fate is a funny thing. The Earth Kingdom ship pulled in, and she caught sight of him. “Zuko!” she abandoned loading her stuff, abandoned the people she was standing with near her boat and ran to him.
