i know that Alfred Tennyson was “straight” or whatever... but like, imagine loving someone so deeply that you write stanzas upon stanzas in his name, create some of the most famous romantic quotes of all time for him, and spend the majority of your time in each other’s company, traveling and encouraging each other to write and prodding just perfectly. then imagine him paying a visit to your home one afternoon, when you are supposed to be young and carefree, and him laying eyes on your little sister and declaring his love of her. it takes little time at all, how could it, you loved him swiftly and deeply—but she loves him just as tenderly as he does, and they are engaged. then just before autumn, with leaves still green and sun still high, you receive a letter from his uncle, which says he died in Vienna at age 22, without pain, inevitable in the end. and you pause, paper tightly gripped, excuse yourself to tell your sister, and catch her as she faints. then you write every word in his name that you could find, write a few more than just those titled after him, and spend a year talking to God and Sorrow in poetry, but even still the world is dark and you think of the places he should’ve lived to see. eventually you find new love and new subject matter, elegies for pretty women and Arthurian legends and how you see God in nature, but still, you sometimes write him next to you as you walk through forests and wish, most of all, that you had had more time
