Today So Far

* Silpats grunged out of the back of the drawer and rendered ungummy.

* Giant blob of rock-hard hamantashen dough out of the fridge.

* Cookie Boulder chunked up into smaller blobs to hopefully soften up faster

* Load of J's laundry (scarves) out of the washer. The weight of them took down the tension bar I use to hang stuff what can't go in the dryer. Oops.

* Tension bar back up, tensioned higher. Stay up this time dammit!

* D has been mutter/singing What A Wonderful World at himself all morning. It's gonna get stuck in my head if I'm not careful.

I DID say I was gonna make hamantashen late...

I made the dough today.

Broke out my hand mixer and everything. Have discovered that my biggest mixing bowl is juuuuuuuuust barely big enough for this recipe. (I mean, I should have known - three sticks of butter is a lot)

I finally did a grocery order, so I have sugar again, and I asked D to bring me orange juice when he went out this morning for coffee.

It all came together beautifully, and it was squishy like perfect clay, but it says to put it in the fridge, so I did. Now it's like a rock. I guess I'll be finishing these up tomorrow. Heh.

There's going to be SO MANY of these. I wonder if they freeze? More likely, I'll bake them all up and have a glorious, sugar-fueled week and then maybe scale way down next time.

Although , if I'm going to go through the trouble, I ought to make as much as possible so I don't have to do it again soonish, seems like the clever path.

Not that I'm likely to.. I bake from scratch like once every other year.

My work today: Here's zero information about a thing that has zero information in the various systems you have available to you - contact these people and tell them what/why/when/where/who info about it! Make this a priority! Do this today! They're not happy and are gonna go with a competitor if you fuck it up!

I have like five of these. All different types of no information.

(Current easiest one is .. here's a number to pull up in the EVERYTHING IN HERE IS TRUE database! How much is their upgraded thing gonna be? me: feeds number into DB. Only info that I don't already have (aka, that number) is an item number I have never seen and nobody can tell me anything about.)

Also my dreams have returned*. So far, no exes going under busses, which is nice.

Instead, it's been stuff like escaping from ghost spiders that possess people, robots, toys, and small animals (but were pretty cool about it when you confront them, as long as you don't turn your back on any of 'em); and being the only person on the (very pretty - brutalist lines with a retro-futuristic vibe and lots of plants) space station/moon outpost to take safety seriously. (What? Explosive decompression is no big deal? Suuuuure. I'm just gonna be over here in my sealed container not dying.)

*for those just tuning in: I stop dreaming when I'm regularly smoking weed. It's been a couple of weeks since I ran out and am not in a position to resupply anytime soon.

My dreams tend to be hyperrealistic and stick with me. (As in, I still have very vivid memories of some of the nighmares I had when I was a little kid.)

Last time I dried out enough to dream, I had a really bad nightmare where I watched an ex get hit by a bus as if it were in some splattergore horror film. She's fine, afik, but I still have that image in my skull.

Looks like we're going to be getting a new housemate.

I'd prefer not to, but finances are what finances are; moving would cost a couple of thousand bucks we don't have (not including the inevitable application fees, deposits, and the thousand other financial papercuts), and I'm not going to sell enough shawls to cover the difference to make it worth keeping the room as an art studio, as much as I want one. (A case could be made that 'need' is stronger than 'want' here - it's a hell of a lot easier to make art if you don't have to rebuild your workspace every time you get a burst of inspiration and then break it all back down into boxes again after.)

(The kitchen table has been my workspace for the past few years, and Dan is convinced that anyone who would move in will want to use it for eating or something equally unlikely. To which I say, "That table has been used for eating at a rate of less than once a year for the past 20 years; why on earth would that change now?" Sure, it's been in storage or at least not set up for at least 12 of those years, but that's still a pretty crap rate.)

1. Huh. Two days off my feet, and they're not swollen. Who knew? *sigh* I'm gonna be walking on balloons again by the time I get home, though.

2. Two days off because my semi-annual BART perk: A few days off work, except it's because you're sick as hell. Hooray.

3. I am officially 100% in love with the clothing from Dare to Wear. Their Renaissance top is glorious and I've ordered a second one. The Embrace sweater is the gothiest cardigan ever, and the only thing keeping it from being perfect is a lack of pockets. I think that small side-seam pockets wouldn't mess up the drape overmuch, but?? Well, the pocket thing and can't go in the dryer. Grmph.

4. My next sewing project is a modern interpretation of a 17th c pocket, to be worn over leggings and under pretty gothy tops. I'm thinking a heavy lining fabric so it doesn't have friction issues, and relatively shallow, so it doesn't poke out from underneath. (I want a place to put pens when I'm at work, basically - I'd love it if I could have my phone in there too, but it's too big. And usually plugged in when I'm at work, so *shrug*)

1. Why is it so hard to get lavender right? The vast majority of the time, when something says it's got lavender scent, it smells fake as hell. Ugh.

2. Finally upgraded my phone. (The old one was deciding it had no charge at 96% full. I kept it limping along when it would dump at ~55%, but this? Nope. Not gonna happen.

So, since I haven't gotten a new phone in over six years (the one I just replaced was an iphone 4S, purchased when they were the new hotness), I got myself an 8. (Not the 8+ because holy hell that thing is huge (this one is just a teeny bit too big for my hands, but I got a ring that sticks onto the case that will allow me to one-hand it on the train without worrying about dropping it) and not the X because I'm not spending that much on something I'm gonna drop!) (Even with the ring thing!)

3. Two seams and some strap placement, and I'm done with my first ever non-rectangle knitting project! I just really hate seaming knitted things, apparently. Ugh. I sure hope this thing looks good on me once I finally finish it!

4. Holiday Shipping Season is about as awful as you might expect. The extra hours are both appreciated and grueling. I don't like 8 hour shifts where I'm on my feet the majority of the time. At all. And BART is like playing sardines, even at 7 am on a Saturday. *sigh*

But I like my new place, and the part where I can afford to do things like upgrade my phone. So tradeoffs, I guess?

5. Amazon decided that instead of three little baggies of Chanukah Gelt (chocolate coins in gold foil - symbolic of giving money/fortune - I'd gotten one for each of us in the house, in a fit of whimsy) I'd ordered two BOXES of little bags (and one little bag all by its lonesome). I guess I'm handing out holiday candy after all this year. :)

6. Still really loving having my own washer & dryer. Doing laundry regardless of how many quarters I have access to is awesome, and NO STAIRS makes it that much better! Who knew I'd not hate doing laundry so much? heheee

Got it into my head to make a rug for the bathroom.

So I've ordered two cones of black cotton (sugar&cream, basically worsted weight) and am going to make a ridiculous amount of icord. I'm going to hold a sparkly tinsel with it so it's got a little glittery goodness (I have spools of hair tinsel because I like shiny things and have a tendency to tie crap into my hair) (then I discovered that I invariably yank the tinsel out of my hair because there's a tiny knot and I can't not tug on knots). You know those coiled rope rugs? Yeah. I'm making one of those.

I just have to wait for yarn. :)

And then make miles and miles of icord. (Yes, there's a gizmo that does it but I'm the kind of batshit that likes doing mindless fiddly things.)

And yes, a black rug for the bathroom. Because why not?

So, I moved.

It was about as clusterfuck a move as I've ever had, and I'm still unpacking (I have lots of stuff in generically (or silly-ly) named boxes ("It came from under the bed..." "snip snip scribble scribble" "oops heavy")

The first movers decided, day of (Saturday), that they weren't doing the move. (There was dust (D didn't wipe down his stuff) and they said they saw a bedbug (we think it was a spider - we didn't have bb's and we had a LOT of spiders))

Queue freakout. We'd just spent the past month packing, and living out of half-packed boxes. I eventually found someone who could do the move on Monday. I spend the weekend scrubbing everything.

Monday. New movers come, actually do the thing! Yay! The cleaners were supposed to have come on Sunday, but nope, can't do the move-out clean with the stuff to be moved out in the way, so that got cancelled.

I scrub down the last of the things I can. ZP and I get Punt into her carrier (it takes two of us. She did NOT want to go in. I tricked Gogo into it without too much work, but then she was stuck in her little box for an extra hour and a half. Poor baby.)

Called a taxi to take the cats across the bay. Driver wants to put my cats IN THE TRUNK. Um, no. Punt is making the saddest cat in the world noises. Driver decides that "there's too much traffic on the bridge and I don't wanna go to Oakland. I'm gonna drop you off at BART. No charge."

Well, fuck. I'm not walking them back up the hill. I'm not waiting for the bus because it's very bright out and I have nothing for shade and two unhappy kitties. But I gotta get across the bay. Fine. I'll traumatize the cats. BART it is.

I think that was the worst experience ever in their lives, but they've forgiven me, and Gogo is clingier than ever.

The cats have discovered sunbeams. (The old place had them for an hour or two for a week in the middle of winter.) They get 'nip and bonito, and all the scritches they want. They're happy.

Once I finish unpacking, I'll be happy. Eventually, I'll finish unpacking. Gotta happen because I want to have people over. :)

I was offline for about a week during this process (we couldn't find the box with the router) and am just now getting back into it.)
