Me explaining what "sinking like a stone" means to one of my students today. She is eight.
Me: So, when you throw a rock into a pond it sinks very fast right to the bottom, doesn't it? Whereas if you have a leaf or a feather, it would float, or sink much more slowly than a rock would, right? So if something is sinking like a stone, it means it's going down really fast, like a rock would in a lake. You get it?
8 year old, completely serious: Yeah, or like if you throw a whole chicken.
Me:
