you know what? screw it. i'm going to tell you lot about an old Fate AU

(for context: this was a drawing collab did between myself and @moonoaware , they did the lineart and i rendered)

the yapping under the cut:

I made it a while back with the lovely @moonoaware , and it was deemed the "Fate AU". It was about Lou being this scam artist fortune teller, who'd convince the masses of dolls that his predictions were fate, manipulating them so they stay with him. The prettydolls were "believers" (meaning they believed in whatever nonsense Lou predicted from a crystal ball and cards) and the uglydolls/imperfect dolls were "non-believers" (those who don't believe the nonsense). The imperfect dolls pretend to believe, but they had this own little group where they were planning to reveal the truth, but they just didn't know how to convince all these dolls... until Moxy and crew arrived.

And recycling was appropriately renamed "The blackhole".

The whole AU was very astrology themed, and all the students wore robes with star patterns all over...

(context for the next one: Lucky Bat is a fortune teller, no? And we thought it was funny that he'd be absolutely APPALLED that Lou is manipulating through fortune telling. He would be the most passionately angry about this xD)(also Zavier is there. Cause hey. He despises Lou too xD) vvv

As for plot (if I exclude the OCs for the moment here)... From what I remember, it's quite similar to the film? But this time around it's the Imperfects and Uglies revealing Lou to be a big liar and that they can leave and nothing is stopping them from doing so besides Lou, yada yada... There was some side plot going on with the OCs BUT. Idk if you lot care so hey.

Hello! About some of your posts, how'd you have liked the latest updates to have gone, in your opinion? For example, more focused on Hikaru and Yoshiki instead of Kurebayashi and Tanaka?

Imo some parts came without proper impact because of the way it's published (cut in 3 or 4 parts weekly)

Sometimes the pacing feel rushed and I'd have liked the boys to confront the last hole (I still think they might), but I'll just trust the process, for now.

Even though sometimes I wanted to take a break and only check out the final results, I don't like the feeling of missing out in the moment and then get sad when the plot goes in a direction I didn't expected or wanted ha...

hi! okay, this might be a bit ramblely and all over but to put it bluntly… i wanted tanaka to die and rie to live. not because i like rie more, but because i think that would have served the narrative better.

my current and main issue is that lot of the emotional stakes of the past few updates have not felt earned? by which i mean i’m being asked to care about rie and tanaka’s relationship in the present when WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT IS LIKE. we get the sense that they’re estranged, but we don’t actually have the precise details, and estrangement levels can vary wildly. for all we know, they text every birthday and new years. or they haven’t talked at all since the company took tanaka away. both are equally as likely with the information we’ve been given. we don’t know if rie has even tried to reach out to tanaka at all since he left. we get him calling her ‘nosy’ but that could mean anything. and this wouldn’t require adding much to the narrative to be clear! just a simple moment of tanaka swiping away a text from mom or rie staring at a unanswered message she sent to him. we’re expected to care about them due to what we’ve seen of their past relationship, but that’s been 15 years from where the main story takes place. that’s a lot of time that’s just missed where anything could have happened between them or not. so their reunion just… felt a little bit too easy? for how accepting rie was? it’s hard to put it into words but i just wasn’t convinced by their relationship in that moment.

another issue i have is that it feels like rie isn’t actually facing consequences for betraying ‘hikaru’? yes she sees him get chopped up, but then she double downs on it… only for a quick speech from tanaka to change her mind? like. no. no that’s not how people work. for a story that normally allows its characters to be refreshingly messy and complicated, this just felt very simple. like a fake reddit post? one speech and she just changes her beliefs? i kinda wanted them to not make up, and if rie was going to have that realisation, she should have had it before she died (which she did, but you get what i’m saying). i’d rather she live and yoshiki get to yell at her, then she sacrifices herself if she had to die. as is, it just feels like she didn’t get anything for what she’s done, especially because unless tanaka or ‘hikaru’ tell him, yoshiki is never actually going to find out what she’s done.

to be clear: i’m fine with the narrative focusing on rie and tanaka for a bit. i’m fine with them getting something to do. flicking back to the boys constantly would have felt jarring so i’d rather it stay with them. it’s more rie’s death doesn’t feel like it serves the narrative or her character any purpose other than to give tanaka trauma. and tanaka has had sacrifice imagery since day fucking one so not killing him seems a bit wasted? the pacing as you said definitely doesn’t help, and there’s definitely some… thorny moments when it comes gender too. why is rie’s dying advice to her son not to get fat. why.

honestly i think if you just cut out the scene where they make up before closing the hole i would have been fine? or if she attempted to make up but tanaka rejected it? individually, i like some of the scenes. i don’t like rie’s death as a concept but i am at least willing to see how the narrative plays out first to see how it fits in. trust the process, as you said
