do you think you'll be watching that new Rohirrim animated movie?

Some other people have asked and I had a longer post in drafts about it, but I did want to respond concisely: likely not.

I've had major grievances with the Peter Jackson & Friends Cinematic Universe version of Tolkien, and its omnipresence in fandom, for decades now. People whose opinions I trust found this particular iteration not universally terrible, but felt WB didn't properly fund the animation and that the movie managed to carry forth the racism torch from the LOTR films like the worst Olympic flame. Given my long-standing annoyance with 1) the racism of the PJCU, 2) the widespread uncritical lauding of the original films as the pinnacle of adaptation, 3) the LOTR/TH films' flattening of so much nuance wrt character and theme and politics, and 4) the movies already blatantly playing favorites with Rohan over Gondor in LOTR, I doubt I'd enjoy watching it and have no desire to support their franchise.

not presently I don't though in light of Recent News it looks like maybe I should try.

well, that's not entirely true. I ostensibly have a twitter (that goes entirely unused, and I'm never going to end up moving there), and I ostensibly have a pillowfort (that has also gone unused, but I'm slightly more likely to move there, provided other people were to as well). other than that...what I'm most likely to end up doing or trying to do is going to dreamwidth, though i'm not sure how well it'll work - it never did for me during my livejournal years and now I'm thoroughly out of the habit of that kind of blogging style.

but some of it will also probably depend to a certain extent on where my friends go. that's what brought me to tumblr in the first place twelve years ago, and that's what's kept me here. but there are certain places/types of site that are friendlier to my brain than others. for instance I can pretty definitively say that twitter clones aren't going to work for me, and reddit is fairly unlikely to work for me either.

but the upshot I guess is that I'm going to be working on diversifying my internet portfolio in advance of tumblr's now probably inevitable demise. will keep y'all posted on where I am/will be on the internet.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, sorry! While I understand why people are freaked out by the ending (and it would probably be better if they didn’t live there until adulthood only to be turned back into children), the ending just seems pretty natural to me? In a portal narrative, I think it’s a good convention for the fantasy to end and for the protags to go home to the real world.

lightning round: where does LOTR fit in on this binary?

LOTR doesn’t give me the same bad feelings because Frodo going to Valinor isn’t really presented as a positive thing? It’s more a chance for him to heal after the failure to acclimatize himself to living a normal life, with the impression that life in the Shire is still the preferable outcome. (Ascending to a Higher Plane of Existence vs. Going Home isn’t really a binary, especially for fantasy stories that take place entirely within the fantasy world - I specified “going home” because that’s the main thing I wanted for the protagonist of Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, and I tend to find “ascending to a higher place of existence” kind of icky as a trope for weird personal reasons.

Harry Potter for the ask meme?

1. The entire last book. If you’re gonna make Deathly Hallows your endgame you could introduce them before the final book maybe.

2. I’m fine with killing characters but doing it purely for shock value is not actually shocking it’s just annoying

3. I think Voldemort could be a lot more complex of a villain. Lately I like a lot of well-written antagonist characters, and I used to think I just didn’t connect with them? Buuuut now I think it’s not me it’s you, Tom. He’s just not that...I don’t really get him, I find him kind of one-note? And given that he’s kind of a big deal to the story, that’s a shame. He could have been really interesting.

4. A lot of the wizarding world doesn’t make much sense, under closer examination. Why is there a statute of secrecy? Where do all these wizards attend primary school? How does the Ministry of Magic....work??? The whole US wizardry thing...I won’t even go there, people have said it better. 

5. Hogwarts is literally lethal to children, why do they let eleven-year-olds get into mortal peril so often? I know, it’s a kids book so the kids kind of have to, I do get that and this point isn’t so serious. But at the same time. Wow, Dumbledore.

...oh my gosh this is really negative I swear I really love these books???

I haven't been active on Pillowfort in ages, but I do have an account that I used for awhile! I may use it again if there's a migration or something.

Apart from Tumblr, though, I'm mainly on Dreamwidth.

I've posted on and off on Dreamwidth for years (sometimes the posts are ones that I originally put on Tumblr, sometimes they're only on Dreamwidth), and it's been really stable and has most of my favorite features. I've maintained a paid account there for a long time out of general appreciation and undying love of icons, but it works fine without one. There are also some updates coming up, so I was thinking of making some updated guide posts ... hmm.

I'm anghraine on both, in any case.

I feel a little bad here because it is almost entirely Jinx all the way down on this one (look! kicked so many of my favorite buttons several times in the face) but to go through them anyway

blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most): yeah it's Jinx. younger siblings with abandonment complexes tenuous sanity and a hunger for blood my beloved now and forever

scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): honestly in light of the post I just made I'm going to put Jinx down for this one too. and I am specifically saying Jinx. yes Powder is actual baby but she doesn't reach full baby status until she's murdered at least 10,000 people and that's just facts

(in actuality though I think it's Viktor. I think it's the one-two combo of the voice and the smile. somehow those two things combined and I was just like. oh no. I want to put you in a terrarium)

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): I feel like to a certain extent this answer depends on fandom and I don't know enough about what happens in fandom to really give an answer here.

maybe Mel or Sevika? both excellent, also both have very sexy character designs. not that all of the character designs in this show aren't sexy (they are)

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): I feel like there's not really enough characters in this show to make any of them particularly obscure, and unfortunately my brain is too busy going JINX all the time apparently to pull out any who would potentially hit that

poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave): JINX 100% I love a character ruining her own and everyone else's lives. complete and utter disaster, you go girl

horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): actually, while Jinx goes here for sure I'm going to throw a curveball and say "also Silco though, would totally plinko Silco and enjoy it."

eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell): I love Mel's mom and her character design is extremely sexy but I would send her to superhell, if you know what I mean.

but also kind of Jayce. it's not his fault I think he just rubs me the wrong way for no good goddamn reason

what do you think about the rumors that Wilson "Wilson Fisk" Kingpin will show up in Hawkeye?

had not heard these rumors! and...well, I guess I don't know? I don't find him particularly interesting as a character. definitely underlines the whole "our tv universe isn't actually our cinematic universe they just kinda look that way" thing that seems to have been going on for a while.

I think this is one of those "wait and see" things, especially because with Kingpin there's a lot of ways to, uh, go offensively wrong, shall we say.
