I once wrote an entire fic inspired by these words. I love sunsetmog with all that I have. That entire scene makes me want to lay down on the floor. In the podcast for that bingo fic card, I read the whole scene out loud. hahahahaha
That Britney shirt? That’s obviously the one Harry stole from Louis on the last tour, and Louis stole it a few years ago from Nick and wore it that day on Lou’s post tour extravaganza when Nick was late and Louis had an argument with Zayn and spammed Nick’s phone with angry messages.
Oops I tripped and fell and on the way down I accidentally opened up InstaPaper, searched my saved fav fics, found the I Had Rather series and fell onto my couch reading it all day.
Last Line Challenge
A few people have tagged me in the ‘tell me the last line you wrote’ challenge recently, but I’ve been blocked for so long I couldn’t really participate. ANYWAY, I have written quite a bit on I Had Rather today, so have a bit more than a line about handcuffs:
"There," he says, like Louis's entire world hasn't just shifted on its axis. "Feel all right?"
Louis blinks up at him. "Yeah," he says, and his voice catches. "Yeah. Feels good."
"Good," Nick says, leaning in, and then his mouth brushes Louis's. He kisses him once, then again, then another time, Louis arching up beneath him as Nick cups his face in his hand and kisses him over again. "Like that you have to stay where I put you."
"Me too." He keeps moving his hands just so that he can feel the leather shift over his wrists.

This is essentially the best error you could have ever made, and I love it so much I’m going to rename the scrivener file this RIGHT NOW.

Okay, so this is the flash forward at the start of the I Had Rather sequel.
I always knew that the point of this story was Louis figuring out who he was, and hating it, and not really grasping that, and Nick not knowing that this was all going on. It’s about how he’s both an unreliable narrator and a liar, and how much he loves and wants Nick and how much Nick loves and wants him, and how those things all interact and what their impact is. So, I had the option of not doing a flash forward, and just building up to that the whole way through the story, but I wanted the reader to know explicitly, right from the off, that this is what Louis is. Before he’s even said a word in the present, he’s told Nick - even if it’s by explicitly not telling him, by telling him something else is false (and this in itself is Louis is this fic, still even at this point unable to articulate the actual truth) - what he’s figured out his sexuality to be, and how he feels about it.
It’s a big choice, doing that reveal before the story even starts, but I didn’t really have to think it over that much. The story isn’t about what Louis is, it’s about how he figures it out, and how he hides it, and how he strains that relationship with Nick that he wants more than anything in desperately trying to hide who he is. How he and Nick figure that out and move on to a healthier and more honest relationship is the unknown. So it was always designed to be about the 2/3 point of the story, like, this is what Louis is, and what the reader knows, and what Louis tries to hide from himself and everyone else, and the unknown is that last third of the story where we jump past the flash forward and they try to figure their shit out.
However, the downside of doing a flash forward and posting the story in chapters is that you have no option but to get there, even if the story takes on a mind of its own and ends up being very long and not at the flash forward point yet.
Hi! Could you possibly post which chapter of I had rather corresponds to which chapter of Than a man? Or do they automatically correspond by number? I wanna re-read I had rather at the same time as I read Than a man so it would be really helpful! Thanks! Also that's a great fic it gave me alllll the feels when I first read it so thanks for giving us louis' pov!!
If you ignore the flash forward at the start of Than a man, then that story starts in September 2013 and moves progressively onwards until it meets the flash forward again (which it hasn’t yet, but will do when it gets to the start of January 2014).
If you’re reading I Had Rather, if you search for this paragraph in chapter 2, then this is where Than a Man starts:
Heat magazine run a whole page on Nick Grimshaw's new boyfriend the following week, using pictures from the GQ awards. Nick refuses to talk about it on the radio, ignoring every comment Fifi, Matt and LMC throw in his general direction.
He drives home at the end of the show, and he doesn't notice the message from Louis until he's in the middle of a conversation with Puppy about appropriate things to chew whilst Nick's at work.

Nick throws his phone across the living room, startling Puppy into a barking fit. He manages to knock a picture off the mantelpiece, and crack his iPhone case at the same time.
He has had it up to here with Louis Tomlinson.
Than a Man then runs parallel to I Had Rather, and continues onwards after I Had Rather ends, which happens at the end of chapter 6 in Than a Man.
