Piero della Francesca's Baptism of Christ
Piero’s baptismal scene is untroubled by modern oppositions between empirical and spiritual. Its visible world is charged with something more than the eye can see. Or rather, what the eye sees participates in a reality the senses cannot directly grasp.
Piero della Francesca, The Baptism of Christ (c. 1437), National Gallery, London. (Creative Commons license)
A few years ago, while visiting London, I wanted to connect with a friend who lives at the outskirts of the city. Neil, who is an artist as well as a priest[i], told me to meet him at Piero della Francesca’s painting of the Baptism of Christ in the National Gallery. I arrived first, and…

John 3:30 (NKJV) - He must increase, but I must decrease.
I’m trying to make way for You. I’m trying to be the voice in the wilderness. Even if I’m alone, that’s okay. You said to drop everything and follow You. I’m learning how, always learning how to drop more parts of myself.

In the Word on Wednesday: John 3:30
Lately, I’ve been reflecting on John the Baptist’s statement in the gospels:
“He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30)
The two go hand in hand, don’t they? As with children on a see-saw, both ends can’t be up at the same time. For one to go up, the other must come down. For one to increase, the other must decrease.

It's a serious struggle when on the one hand I'm a die-hard nester who collects and hoards and stuffs and surrounds myself with things, and on the other hand I crave freedom and purging myself of belongings and want to live as minimally as possible.
And it doesn't help that every time I get rid of a bunch of stuff, it magically ends up back in the house because my mom thinks I "might change my mind."
Which makes the process of letting go all the harder. Because I have to go through it again and again for the same things.
Emotional ties to possessions can only weigh you down.
And everyone is miserable in this house.
Material possessions can't make you happy.
I know my mom wants the best for me. But I want the best for her too. And it's hard to get to see how much better our lives could be.
Every time I come home I feel powerless like I'm right back in high school.
And I try to stand up for myself and make a change.
But things never seem to change even in the slightest.
So this time I'm giving it 210%. I'm not giving up. Growing through love I'm going to kindly and patiently weed through the mass of belongings and say my goodbyes to all the literal baggage I've been carrying around.
And I've convinced my mom to at least let me go through her closet with her when she gets out of work for Christmas break.
And that's a start.
Praise be to God that I can mess up on stage during worship like four times and His name still echoes in the hearts of the church.
