Whatever appetite he had worked up was gone just as fast as it had come to him. The slice of cake he had cut himself is gently nudged to the side, gaze flickering over to Connie. His lips parted and then closed, shifting uneasily. It’s not that he isn’t excited, he is, but it’s the fear of raising a kid. He’s only a junior is high school. Sure college had never been something he was actually considering, but now— now he might have to go. And Bruce, oh—- he had to tell Bruce.
He’s always wanted his own family —- that he’d be able to be there for his own kids the way his own parents never got the chance to be for him. He’d do everything in his power to make sure he saw his kids grow up, to make sure he watched their dreams come true. But they’re just kids.
A shaky hand is reached across the table and Connie takes it without hesitation. They hold onto each other for what feels like centuries before Dick moves from his spot to throw his arms around her, pulling her in tight against him. She isn’t alone. He wants her to know that she isn’t alone and the only way he’s leaving her and this baby is that if he dies. He doesn’t care that he’s young. He’ll go out and get a job if he has to—- anything to help them.
She didn’t know what to expect when she’s told him, but she was glad that he hugged her so tight. Her arms wrap up around his neck and she nuzzles her face into any comfortable spot she can get it. It’s taken a lot for her to upright keep herself from crying and she’s determined not to do it now. He’s always been there for her and she knows that he’s not going to leave her because of this. He wasn’t that kind of person.
Slowly she pulls back and looks up at him, hands coming up to tenderly cup his face. “Are you alright, Dickie-Bird?” She asks, thumbs brushing against his cheeks before she leans up to kiss him lightly. She was scared and she was pretty sure that he was too. She was going to try and comfort him just like he was trying to comfort her too. It was really the least she could do right now. She couldn’t fall apart yet.
She could fall apart when it really hits her that she’s already broken their lives up with this news. They weren’t going to have that nice fun young adult lifestyle. They were going to have to work hard to take care of this baby that she’s got growing inside of her. She doesn’t know what she’s feeling about it all right now, but she wants to at least have him here with her now. They could talk about what they were going to do.
