Viv was a big fan of physical lists. She carried a yellow legal pad with her at all times for the express purpose of writing and crossing things off of lists. Today she had made a grand total of three lists: one for the books she needed the library to order, one for the strange sightings she’s heard tourist talking about, and one of things she’d need for her stake out tonight.
She crossed off each item as she packed. Water bottle, flashlight, transistor radio, sleeping bag… Her parents hadn’t taken her camping since she was in elementary school, but she remembered most of what they had taught her. She would eat dinner with them and then sneak out once they were already in bed. If all went as planned she would be back before breakfast.
This was her first time legitimately sneaking out of the house. She had run tests, of course. She knew the best way out her second story window and when her parents would be deepest asleep according to their REM cycle. She was all set.
