2:30 am
Seven stood in front of the small wall mirror in her basement room. She intently stared at herself in the mirror before she took a deep breath and smacked her cheeks once to wake herself up.
“I’m Seven, nice to meet you.” She glared at herself. That sounded really odd, like a machine that malfunctioned. “I’m here to scout you, so follow me.” she declaimed this time, pointing a finger forward in an almost comical type of way. Her gestures reminded somewhat of a magical girl from an anime, which were one of the very few pleasures she indulged in when she had a couple hours of free time. Every since her master had given her a room with a tv in it she had found at least a bit of interest in these things. Back then she didn’t really see the point of owning a tv, she couldn’t use it for programming or hacking, but slowly she opened up to turning it on now and then and watching a few animations. She still didn’t like watching live-action dramas or movies. Watching humans was only useful to gather information, not to get enjoyment out of viewing their interactions after all.
But this time she had put on a tv drama she found on one of the many channels and glanced over at the tv to watch the people on screen for their behaviour. It was an exception because with her new order she had to learn how to interact in the outside world without standing out like a sore thumb. The woman in the drama tilted her head and twirled her hair with her fingers while she talked to a male in front of her. Seven tried to mimic this gesture while repeating what the woman on the screen said “Why don’t we go somewhere more private?” but she couldn’t help feeling like she not only looked but also sounded ridiculous. Watching the female on the screen again, she couldn’t help feeling a little jealous of how natural it came to this woman to act so freely .... human. Was there ever a time Seven was able to act like this too? Before it all started... it was as if her memories of herself, before she became who she was now, were all erased from her system. She didn’t know how she acted or even how her mind worked. All she remembered now was emptiness, her memories of the time before were like an empty room without windows for lack of a better analogy, but precisely like the place, she was kept in when she was trained for what she had become after.
At that exact moment, she felt her stomach growl. Thinking back to the years of her training must have made her feel hungry. Maybe because subconsciously she was brought back to times of being deprived of food and water if she didn’t show the results that were expected from her. She sighed and turned off the tv. She would try again to study the behaviour of the outside world once she got herself a snack. Because she knew better than anyone that working on an empty stomach made tasks even harder.
