   there’s no reason for her to invite him over. no reason other than ... she wants him here, or maybe she just doesn’t want to be alone, that would be an easier pill to swallow. it’s christmas eve and she was supposed to go home, but every time she thought about it she felt a knot in her stomach that wouldn’t be undone until she told herself she didn’t have to go. but that left her alone on christmas eve, drinking in an apartment she’d spent time decorating, all of those little lights going to waste on her pity party.

   but ... inviting danny ... no she couldn’t. she shouldn’t. which just ended up pissing her off enough to pick up her phone, because why the hell shouldn’t she invite her friend over. promptly she tosses it back on the couch behind her. there’s been mild confusion on her end lately. confusion that she can’t have about her fucking cousin’s ex husband. maybe she was just being ridiculous because she’d been at dance rehearsals so often this past month that he was just the only person she managed to talk to much lately. so her brain was being extra destructive for no reason. 

   it takes about half an hour to convince herself that’s the reason, there’s no r e a l confusion. which means it wouldn’t be weird to invite him over. especially when she knows he was still at the studio an hour ago thanks to his instagram stories.

   now that wasn’t so fucking hard was it, elizabeth drops her head back against the couch with a sigh, glaring up at the ceiling as she tells herself it’s just because he was the only one in the city. all of her other friends were busy, her cousins were both gone. in fact if anything he was her last choice, yep, she wouldn’t have reached out if anyone else had been around. if she keeps telling herself that maybe she’ll really start to believe it.

the raw of her cheeks flushed maraschino red with all the blood that had rushed to her face , her heart hammered against the hollow of her chest , thrumming to the thudding bass that rattled in her ears like a pinball in overwhelming gameplay . senses so saturated they dulled . she likened the feeling to being underwater , drifting along the bottom of a pool with alcohol-muddled purpose , to find one particular face amongst the horde . a feat that would’ve been far easier had she forgone that last nauseating concoction of too little tonic water and too much of something else , or perhaps it was simply the blacklights overhead , the neon spatters of paint that obscured features until everyone appeared to be nothing more than a blur . and tonight isabel’s typically practiced , perfected presence blended in with the far from meticulous crowd ( bottle-blonde hair stuck to slick skin , teeming with fluorescence and sweat , speckles of splattered paint smeared across her body in unorganized array despite a futile attempt to remain fairly clean ) . she figured that even she , sidling through the neon dripped and clammy bodies that smelled of liquor and something akin to sin , appeared ill-defined beneath the blue glow . it was disorienting , so terribly , terribly disorienting — at least until her gaze finally tripped upon a silhouette that more than vaguely resembled her best friend . “ guess who ! ” a lilt , a trill , the cloying tone her voice assumed was a flicker of warmth that she reserved only for her closest friends . with one hand reached over sav’s ( she hoped ? ) shoulder , fingers waggling before her eyes , she made no true effort to obscure her vision .  “ i’ll give you a hint . she’s ... ” a pause as she waded ankle-deep in careless thought . “ sweet as can be , like strawberries and cream , and incredibly modest to boot . and , fortunately for you she’s got a flask of don julio stashed in her bra , that she may be willing to share with her favorite person in the room . answer correctly and you’ll be saving yourself a few extra trips through this crowd . ”
