The root of the problem
Enlightenment is a natural consequence of applying awareness to one's beliefs through meditation, yet the root of the problem still persists. There is still an I-self present, which is of value only to its own maintenance.
It is in a state of awareness, that the I-self can be seen for what it is. And this brings about awareness of what this "I" then consists of. The major part of the I-self is identification with the observed self and the idea, that if I do, feel or think something, this is me. People have said to me, that the enlightened state is a state of love and compassion. True, this is what you feel accompanied by gratefulness. Still, the emotion is but what it is. Telling the reflection in the water from the water itself is the trick of oberservation in regards to self-identification. This seems hard to realize, but in reality is effortless.
What happens when the mind is quite, when the emotions are balanced and the body is still, is the emergence of a stillness in which the I-self starts to react. There must be something here, that it can cling to. Something it can tell apart, judge, talk about, identify with or define as having the qualities of me. The I-self must be this experience. And sometimes immediately the stillness then becomes this new "me". And the I-self feel enlightened. Yet it has but taken a new form. An enlightened form nevertheless, which is truely full of love, compassion and delight, yet still a form with the consequences hereof.
The effortlessness lies within not doing anything; nothing at all. There is nothing one can do to be enlightened. No identification to be made, no opinion to be spoken, no action to take, no thought to give room, no emotion to act out. Nothing but stillness. The absorbance into stillness then dissolves little by little that which has been build for its own protection. And the enlightened can be reborn.
Out of this, comes the realization of the world as a place in which myriads of identifications are made each day. And for each identification, there is hope. A hope that at some point, the scale will tip, and the last part of the I-self can be seen for what it is. This will truely change everything. A new existence is born, in which there is still love, compassion and gratefulness. And now these emotions can be seen as the mere tools of change and the interconnectedness of humanity.
Why not taste the truth and nourish this experience of unconditional and unattached love without getting in its way? Thus letting it float freely as a compassionate emotion, detached from any I-self and any constraints.
Stillness is the cradle in which this rebirth into oneness can take place, again and again. And stillness, love and enlightenment is then but a part of me, not something I call myself.
With love and hope.
