The what now?
“Are you really gonna leave without asking me the question you’ve been dying to ask me?”
Ben’s pointed stride seized at his best friend’s words, placing him directly in the doorway of her hospital room. One more step and he was free to do whatever he had to do to forget the last twenty four hours of his life. Of course the question had been running through his brain the entire time, no end in sight. They’d had a pact- an unspoken one, but a pact all the same: don’t touch the hard stuff. It’s alright to crave a high, to want to forget things for a bit, they’d all experienced it. But deliberately sending your life into a down spiral? That crossed the line and all of them knew it. Why? Why, why, why, why? To be completely honest, Ben wasn’t sure he even wanted to know- knowing would only make it worse. Rubbing a knuckle under his eye, he turned to send one last pointed look in Zelda’s direction and almost broke down and voiced the question. But he didn’t. Instead, he simply took the final step toward freedom, though leaving her presence didn’t feel nearly as good as he’d expected.
