1968 - Journalist I.F. Stone accused American police departments of doing the dirty work of the Ku Klux Klan. 

“Violent, anti-Negro organizations like the Klan have their cells in many police forces,” said Stone. “The Memphis police had shown their hatred in the indiscriminate violence with which they broke up Dr. King’s march a week [before the assassination]. The Attorney General should be pressed to include the Memphis police in his investigation of the slaying.”

The only kinds of fights worth fighting are those you're going to lose, because somebody has to fight them and lose and lose and lose until someday, somebody who believes as you do wins. In order for somebody to win an important, major fight 100 years hence, a lot of other people have got be willing -- for the sheer fun and joy of it -- to go right ahead and fight, knowing you're going to lose. Journalist I.F. Stone accused J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI of ignoring the terror of the Ku Klux Klan in favor of the Red Scare.

Hoover was “fierce about Reds, pinks and – a favorite target of his scorn – ‘do-gooders,’ but he never seems to warn against racism ... Here we find the head of the F.B.I. treating the sit-ins as a Communist plot in a way which can only encourage the racial paranoia endemic in the South. Though the Klan and allied organizations have been growing rapidly, Mr. Hoover still clings to the senescent and dwindling Communist Party, U.S.A., as our no. 1 subversive menace.”
