My opinions on abortion and my pro-choice stance.
Abortion:
I honesty don't know how many fellow Choicers will agree with me or not, but I believe everyone has the right to life. I believe that a 20 year old male has as much right to life as a 6 week old embryo. What I also believe is that everyone doesn't have the right to use another person against informed consent. This includes a 60 year old female, or a 12 week fetus. I believe that if a woman is pregnant, she has every right to decide if she wants to continue the pregnancy or end it, because the woman has the right to her bodily autonomy. The major argument I hear Pro-Lifers say to that is, "that fetus baby has a body and its own bodily autonomy"- yes, they are correct, but let's take a look at this statement: "A woman can survive without the fetus; the fetus cannot survive without the woman(up to a certain point, of course)." This means that the fetus(wanted or not) is using the woman's body to survive, not the other way around.
Bodily Autonomy This phrase is the entire argument to Pro-Life position. It's simple and to the point. It doesn't require much of an explanation but it is what it is. Every born person has the right to defend and protect their bodies. Every person has the right to consent or refuse decisions regarding their bodies. If their bodily autonomy is threatened, they are allowed to defend it. Bodily autonomy is the reason why slavery, rape, forced organ harvesting and murder are illegal. All of the above infringe on bodily autonomy of a born person. To force a woman to carry an unwanted pregnancy is akin to biological slavery. It is illegal. Violation of the Human Rights.
"Dehumanizing slang" Another trend I have noticed is Pro-Lifers, saying that the words "zygote", "blastocyst" "embryo" and "fetus" are dehumanizing, and claim the proper term is "baby". This is false. Those "dehumanizing" words are not meant to be there to make a human fetus appear non-human. Those words are there to determine the age of gestational development. Zygote- the resulting cell after a single sperm and egg join, in other words, a fertilized egg. Blastocyst/Blastula- rapid rate of cell division. Implantation then occurs. Embryo- mass of cells up that keep dividing until 10th week. Fetus- begins at 8- 10 weeks up until birth. All those words are there to determine which gestational stage the Z/E/F is in. It is not dehumanizing in any way. Now the word "baby"- it is an emotional word. I call my husband my baby, call my phone my baby. I call my pets my babies. Obviously they are not actual newborn babies. The word "baby" cannot be used as a scientific tool for age.
"Life begins at Conception" False. Life began millions of years ago and has not stopped. To imply that life begins at conception is to say that the sperm and ovum were dead prior to fertilization. This is a fallacy.
"Abortion should be illegal except in cases of rape or incest" I hear this constantly, even from some women I have known who have had an abortion. The above statement basically says that if you enjoy sex, you have to be punished with a child. That the consensual-sex fetus is less worthy than a brutal-rape fetus. Why? All it tells me is that the individual who says this phrase is not Pro-Life, but Pro-Punishment.
"Give it up for adoption" If a woman has sex and gets pregnant, regardless of her birth control usage or lack of, she is not obligated to carry a pregnancy she does not want. I do not understand the statement above at all. Adoption and abortion are not interchangeable terms. You cannot adopt out a fetus, or abort a newborn. Adoption also solves unwanted parenting, not unwanted pregnancy. Another thing, those who claim to be Pro-Life and telling women to place their babies for adoption, while saying things like, "I can't adopt because I have no money/room/finances/job/etcetera" are the biggest hypocrites of all. How can one person force another to do something, while refusing to do the same because of an inconvenience such as no money*sarcasm*? Also, there are over 500,000 kids in foster homes already, what is happening to them every time a woman gives a newborn up for adoption? Their chances of being adopted get erased even more.
Why I'm Pro-Choice.
I am Pro-Choice because: I believe every woman has the right to decide what happens to her body. I believe every woman has the right to decide if and when she will become a mother. I believe every woman has the right to decide if abortion is a choice. I believe every woman has the right to decide if adoption is a choice. I believe every woman has the right to decide if parenting is a choice. I believe every woman has the right to privacy. I believe that if someone's actions and decisions are not affecting you in any direct way, then you have no reason nor right to interfere with their rights and wishes. It isn't a difficult concept.
