ok so I just saw the post about the video that said not to click the video submitted to everyone's mailbox, but what happens if you did? I accidetally clicked it and I don't know what's gonna happen?
((Okay, since I got a flood of messages from quite a few users, I'm going to help you through this the best I can in a few steps:
Step #1: Remain calm.
Fear and panic are the enemy. They prevent rational and logical thought. The four fold breathing technique used in meditation can assist you in finding your calm center. By being calm, you will enable yourself to act in a logical and rational matter. Also start thinking in steps and stages of problem solving. This is by far the most important step in dealing with any emergency situation. As someone who has operated in search and rescue, I can tell you that being calm and logical are very important things.
Step #2: Do a scan on your computer.
There are a lot of free anti-virus software suits on the internet. The one that comes the most highly recommended at least to me is AVG. But the best thing you can do is to scan your computer.
Step #3: Change your passwords.
The most secure passwords you can craft contain 8 alphanumeric characters. Usually a sort of jumbled arrangement of letters (both captial and lowercase), numbers, and other characters. The password has to be familar to you but something not easily guessed by anyone else. Birthdays, names, discernible words are bad ideas for passwords. Also, do NOT use passwords such as "admin," "default," or "iamgod" as they are the top three password in the world right now. The longer your string of memorable characters are, the stronger your password will be. You need to create the highest permutation count as possible. I realize this is basic knowledge but it is no less valuable.
Step #4: Clear your cookies.
Ensure that there are no cookies in your browser. Clear out all your personal information. For additional protection, you can use a portable browser on a USB stick as they tend not to leave traces of themselves and their respective history on your computer. portableapps.com is a great place to look for portable software. Bonus - you can take your favourites everywhere! Back to the main point at hand, clean your cookies.
Step #5: Do not click on videos from people you don't know.
I realize to a few of you, this seems rather pointless to say and it is much akin to someone telling you to "be careful" right after an accident. However, the information is still valid. This is a popular method utilized to either enable a hacking attempt or a viral attack here on Tumblr. Most of us have seen warnings about videos like these. To double check a video, hover your cursor over the video ensuring not to click on it. By checking the bottom corners of your browser (depending on the browser) you can discern where the link is going. Do not post these videos as a precaution to prevent your fellow Tumblr users from clicking on it inadvertently If you have posted one of these videos by mistake, delete the video immediately.
