Why has Elena all of a sudden become conscious of how she looks and that her outfit is perfect and her hair is perfect around Damon? One of the things I love about DE is how at ease and comfortable they are around eachother and now all of a sudden she's acting like that?

You can know the guy for 15 years and he saw you in your worst, but the moment you realize he's the guy you want to really date, you'll become self-conscious around him because you want to attract his attention and not look awkward. It has nothing to do with being comfortable or not, it's just a normal thing to happen.

Their relationship is very natural and comfortable but that scene is actually pretty normal for a girl and very human. Even tho she is super close w/ Damon she was never fully aware of her feelings for him. Now that she does - she is almost very conscious about them. So like any girl who likes a boy - they want to look their best. They become a little self-conscious in front of them - and they hadn’t gotten together at that point yet. It’s like the beginning of any new relationship. It was very cute actually.
