She approaches him at night, under the cover of darkness, the exact opposite of what the handlers have taught her to do. They want her to come to him by day, on a busy street, somewhere he can't make a scene and run for it. Instead, being a true Barnes child, she does the exact opposite as soon as the opportunity arises.

"Bucky," she says urgently, grabbing her brother by the arm under a streetlamp that turns his brown hair gold and washes out her pale features. "I don't have time to explain, but we need to run somewhere safe, now, and fast, before they find us."

"That...makes sense," Becca says, averting her eyes but with a smile playing around her mouth. "It's only been, what, eighty years?" She knows how ridiculous it is for her to be here, looking like she does instead of pushing a hundred. How unthinkable it must be for him.

Don't give too much information, just get him out in the open, they told her.

"I know how upsetting this must be, to see me. And I know I have a lot to explain to you. Would you come for a walk with me and I can explain?"

"I'm sorry, were you speaking to me or someone else? Because if you were speaking to me, surely you would have watched your tone."

ANTAGONISM - MEETINGS

"Yes, I'm still mad, and I'll be mad forever!" Becca shouts through the bedroom door standing firmly closed between them. Normally Bucky and Becca share the bedroom, but she's well within her rights to lock him out after such an egregious betrayal. "Annie was my favorite doll and now she's gooooone!" The last word elongated into a howl of misery as she recalled her beloved Raggedy Annie (not a real Raggedy Ann, they couldn't afford it, but Mama had made a good copy out of an old flour sack) floating away down the sewer drain after Buck sent her for a trip on his newspaper boat. It'll be months before Mama can get together enough spare rag to make her a new one, and it won't be the same Annie anyway. Hot tears spill down Becca's cheeks and stain the front of her dress as she kicks her heels angrily into the floor beneath them.

It's the first time Becca's been able to fall asleep anywhere other than her room with the door tightly locked and a chair leaning up against the knob to stop it turning. She's only on the sofa, nowhere terribly exciting, but it's a big step for her.

"Mm, wasn't sleeping," she murmurs and rubs her eyes when the blanket settles over her. "Just resting my eyes."

"Don't say that, you can't promise me that!" Becca snaps and continues pacing the apartment, shrinking away from the windows until finally pulling all the curtains shut with an impatient huff.

Barely out of Hydra's clutches and she's nervous as an alleycat, unable to sit still for more than a few minutes before checking for the nearest exit or running her fingers over the fresh wound where the tracker had been embedded in her arm. For a while she tried cleaning to keep her mind busy, but she was never much of a homemaker and soon gave that up, so it's pacing the floors and tugging at her skin for now.

"I'm not a little girl anymore, Bucky. You can't just promise things that aren't possible and expect me to believe you because you said so. Like the time you convinced me the moon was shy and that's why it went away once a month, or-or that birds could talk if I was just patient enough to listen." She so wishes she were still that innocent little girl who believed her brother could make those things true. But too much has changed. She has changed.

Don't approach him in private, they told her. Wait until he's somewhere public, somewhere he can't overreact without drawing attention. Act as if nothing has changed. Do not run when you see him.

If you fail, there will be consequences.

Becca's been watching Bucky for what feels like hours but must only have been minutes, or he would have noticed her by now. She straightens her dress, not one made by her mother but a good approximation, and tucks a lock of hair behind her ear before approaching. Act naturally, she reminds herself and puts on a sunny smile.

"Hi, Buck," she says with a hint of a tremor in her voice belying her nerves. Tucks her hands into her pockets to hide their shaking. "I thought I'd find you here."

secret menu muse: Rebecca Barnes

Kid sister to Bucky Barnes, Becca idolized her big brother and was often tagging along after him on his teenage exploits, much to his chagrin and her delight. She also harbored a girlhood crush on Steve Rogers, more due to the social trope that one must fall in love with your big brother’s friends than actual feelings, and she reveled in agonizing over her little unrequited crush for years. When Bucky was drafted she was devastated but also proud of her brother, and did her part for the war effort at home by collecting scrap metal and recycling glass bottles to help keep the family afloat and sometimes secure extra ration slips for necessary household goods. When she got older she took a job at a clothing shop and learned how to mend and alter garments for neighbors.

After Bucky and Steve were presumably killed in action she was utterly heartbroken, but now the oldest Barnes child and responsible for caring for the family. She worked hard and spent many long nights mending clothes to keep the family afloat, and dreamed of one day making her own clothes and having a store after the war ended.

However, she would never see that dream, because she was kidnapped by Hydra operatives with the intent of using her as collateral if Bucky ever broke programming and tried to escape his imprisonment. After all, if he didn’t have a sweetheart, what better than a beloved younger sister to lure him back into Hydra’s clutches? She was placed in cryostasis to be pulled out if ever the day came that she could be useful, and it was even tossed around to possibly use her when Captain America was suddenly resurrected from the dead, but ultimately decided against as too high a risk.

The day didn’t come until the Winter Soldier broke programming and escaped captivity in Washington, DC, following the Triskelion disaster. Becca awoke in the modern world and was put through rigorous psychological torture to ensure she would remain obedient to Hydra, and is preparing to be released into the public to retrieve her brother and return him to Hydra’s clutches.
