tummy time. that's what father used to call it back when he was father and not stede. it's probably what he still calls it. or maybe not. he's changed a lot. he's not like he used to be. the first time he came home, he was. but he changed before he left. and now he's back, and he's different. he looks different. and he brought friends. (stede never had friends before).
alma is helping mom cook dinner, and doug is talking to stede, so louis is having tummy time. laying on the floor. drawing. both he and mother have been getting more into art. mom bought him pencils, on his last birthday, fancy colored ones. they're fun.
out of nowhere, the strange man joins him.
ed is nice, louis knows. he is willing to play pirates, and he smiles, and he makes jokes, and he respects louis's thoughts.
wordlessly, louis tears a page of paper out of his notebook, pushing his pencils to ed in case he wants to draw too. he takes a yellow one for himself in color in his own drawing and kicking his feet back and forth in the air.
