Retirement wasn't something that Steve really knew how to handle. With Sam taking up the title of Captain America, Steve felt at a complete loss of how to handle his new found freedom. He hadn't taken a break in nearly 20 years (before and after the fall into the ice). He didn't know how to put down the mantle he had forged for himself. So he created a routine in hopes that would relieve his listlessness.

Steve spent his days doing the same routine he created 4 years ago. Something his former Avengers turned friends gave him a hard time about all the time. But today, the routine changed. As he was walking through the park as he did at exactly 8 am every morning, a familiar figure left Steve in disbelief. "You gotta be shittin' me." He grumbled. "Look, I don't have time to be talking to ghosts." Lie. He had nothing but time these days.

But, Steve being Steve approached the figure and cleared his throat to get his attention, "You make a habit of coming to Central Park?" He asked in a tone that made it sound like he was discussing the weather. He didn't want to alert the people around him and cause a scene.

"I know a little something about not feeling normal and I just have to say, everyone deserves to feel normal." He reassured her, "You may have done some things that weren't right but at the end of the day, Wanda, you're helping other people. That's what counts."

“Steve, honey.. your daughter is asking for you again!”

@illbringthechaosmagic Steve smiled softly, the hint of a tired but happy father showing in his eyes. "Alright, alright. I'm coming!" He called back, coming into the kitchen where Wanda and their daughter were standing, apparently making cookies. Steve grinned when his daughter came running over, picking her up and tossing her in the air before bringing her into his embrace. The little girl, Sarah, was Steve's pride and joy. He glanced to Wanda with a soft smile. He would thank whoever was listening every single day for the woman in his kitchen and the daughter in his arms. Steve moved over to Wanda and pulled her close with his other arm, pressing a kiss to her lips that held all the gratitude in that single kiss.

Steve just raised an eyebrow at her words, his eyes calculating as they swept over her body and taking in the bruises and scrapes. She clearly had been in a fight and she didn’t look terrible, so that meant one thing. She’d won but was probably sore as hell. Steve reached out and took her hand, squeezing gently, “You’re not indestructible, you know.” He reminded her, voice quiet and laced with worry. He was worried about her. She was alright, that much he knew. But he didn’t know how long that would last. 

He brought her hand to his lips and then pressed a kiss there. He then moved without hesitation and scooped her up, carrying her in his arms to the bathroom so he could get a first aid kit to get her cleaned up, “You worry the hell out of me.”

It was the Avengers quarterly movie night, a tradition where everyone got back together again, even if some of them weren’t technically on the team. There were new faces, Bucky, Yelena, and others, as well as Sam and Wanda. But others showed up too: Tony and Pepper, Clint, and others. Steve didn’t always come, some of the memories too raw. But he was able to make it this time.

Everyone was thrilled to see him, even the newest avengers who had only heard stories namely from Bucky and Sam. He gave a side hug to Bucky and offered Tony a small bag of blueberries. Tony clutched them like a holy relic. And then he felt a pressure on his back, Wanda hugging him tightly from behind in an unexpected hug. He grinned, “Hey.” he turned to face her, returning the embrace, “It’s good to see you.” A warm smile was on his face as he looked at her. He grabbed her hand then and led her to where everyone else was.

It was a bad fight, one too many times it was a close call. Steve and Buck always worked great together but Bucky stumbled after a particularly hard hit to Steve, failing to block a hit to himself as he watched Steve get knocked back. He did always worry too much about Steve. Or, maybe, not enough. So after the fight, Bucky followed Steve into their shared room. And then he moved. Steve gasped softly, not expecting Bucky to press him into the wall or the dark look in his eyes. Steve blinked, staring back into Bucky’s before a fierce kiss was pressed to his lips. Steve’s eyes widened, clearly startled, but then melted into the kiss, letting Bucky keep him pinned to the wall. Steve’s hands slid up his arms and locked around the brunette’s neck. Despite being broader, slightly stronger, it was Bucky who held the momentum. The weight of his desperation pushed him forward.

When the kiss finally broke, Steve didn’t move far, pressed his forehead to Bucky’s as they each caught their breath. “I’m fine, Bucky.” he whispered, loving for the other man shining in his eyes,  “I’m here, it’s me. I’m going anywhere.” He promised it like a vow, one he intended to keep.

Steve and Bucky were curled up on the couch as Bucky dealt with the aftermath of another bad dream. Steve would gladly do this every night for the rest of their lives if it meant Bucky felt safe again. Steve’s breath caught at Bucky’s words and he tipped his head up to make the other look at him, his blue eyes filled with worry. “Bucky,” he said softly, “I’ve made a lot of promises in my life, but that one? The easiest one I will ever make.”

“I’m not going anywhere. Ever. You’ve been through so much, more than anyone should ever have to bear, and I’ll never make you face that alone again. You’re my best friend, my family, my everything. I fought for you before and I’ll keep fighting for you now. Nothing in this world could pull me away from you.” He smiled then, pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead. “So, yeah, I promise. You’re stuck with me, Buck. Always.”

Steve stood there for a moment, his hands resting on his hips as he digested what she said. He was a humble guy who always wanted to be there for others. It took him by surprise when others thanked him for just doing what he thought was right. He looked bashful, a smile playing at his lips. “Wanda,” he started, “you don’t have to thank me for doing what’s right. I’m always going to do that” He took a step closer, his presence grounding, “But I’m glad I was there.” 

He hesitated, his hand reaching out to rest on her hip to draw her in close to his side. “The truth is,” he admitted, “I’d step in for you every time, always. I don’t think you realize how much you mean to me, Wanda.” His gaze softened as he looked into her eyes. He felt so strongly for her and he only wished she understood that depth of that care, “You don’t have to thank me. Just promise me you’ll let me keep being there for you. Deal?”
