Secret Penpal AU (You’ve Got Mail)

James goes out the door. It closes. Kara tiptoes over to the window and peaks through the blinds, watching him descend down the front steps and into the bustle of the city. 

He’s gone. Good. 

Kara sits down at her computer and powers it up, logs into her email. A big smile takes over her face when she sees a single notification among many. With a few clicks, Kara deletes pieces of junk mail then opens the message with nervous inhale.

Subject: Hope

She begins to read, softly out loud to herself.  “Hope is my dog. She loves the streets of National City as much as I do. Although she likes to eat bits of pizza and bagel off the sidewalk, I resort to my ungodly addiction to kale smoothies-”

“Kale?!” Her nose scrunches up at the thought but she laughs and shakes her head, then continues to read with a full heart.

Hope is so dazzling that she was once offered to try out for the Canine Crunchies commercial line. But she chose to stay with me instead and spend 18 hours a day on a large red pillow the size of an inner tube.

Don’t you love National City in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would buy you a bouquet of newly-sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address. On the other hand, this not knowing has its charms.

“Thank you!” Lena smiles at the smoothie barista, leaving a generous tip as always then continues on down the bustling street with her golden retriever gleefully trotting by her side. She’s beautiful with long dark hair, green eyes and a killer jawline. She dresses casually in the mornings while walking, stopping here and there to let the dog sniff light poles and mailboxes. It is a struggle to keep her from gobbling up scraps of bread and tomato cheese along the way back to the apartment, though. “Come on, girl.”

Inside the apartment is bright and clean and open. The golden retriever goes straight to Lena’s personal office, settling down on a big red pillow with the name ‘Hope’ embroidered in golden letters. Lena goes into the kitchen and sits down with her half-drunken green smoothie and a book, taking a moment to look out her window to smile at the changing colors of the trees below.

Lena’s girlfriend, Andrea Rojas, dressed from head to toe in Armani, comes into the kitchen and turns on the espresso machine that Lena paid way too much for. The sound of the grinder buzzes noisily.

“I’m late!” She shouts over the 20 seconds of noise while rushing around, holding up a copy of the newspaper, indicating to the headlines there. “Random House fired Dick Atkins. Good riddance! Which makes one less person I’m not speaking to. Vince got a great review. He’ll be insufferable. Tonight, PEN dinner.”

“Am I going?” Lena asks with her eyes glued to her book.

“You promised.”

“Can I just give them money? What’s the cause? Free the Albanian writers? I’m for that.”

Andrea drains a cup of espresso and gives her a dead look.

“Alright, fine. I’ll go.” At that, Andrea grins and kisses Lena’s cheek. “You’re late.”

“I know, I know!” Andrea tears out of the kitchen and the door slams behind her, finally. Lena shoots up from the table and pauses, listening to the elevator doors open and close on the landing outside. That’s her cue.

Lena rushes to the office with a grin, sits down at the computer and boots it up. Hope pops up with her front paws on the desk, panting and slobbering on her owner's neck as she gets head scratches. 

“Good Morning, Miss Luthor.” The computerized assistant's voice rings. “You’ve got mail.”

Subject: Dear Friend

I’d like to start my notes to you as if we’re already in deep conversation. I pretend that we are the oldest and dearest friends as opposed to what we actually are, people who don’t know each other's names and met in a chatroom where we both claim to never have been before. What will NC152 say, I wonder. I turn on my computer. I wait impatiently as it boots up. I open my email and my breath catches in my chest until I see the notification.

I hear nothing, not even a sound on the streets of National City, just the beat of my own heart. I have mail. From you.
