I was first introduced to Trevor Shimizu’s work when reading about my former Professor Gaylen Gerber curating this Japanese artist’s paintings ON his artwork (that famous grey wall canvas) along with other artists’ pieces...a group show on Gaylen’s controversial “piece” at the 2014 Whitney Biennial.

Then first time when I “saw” Trevor was when I dropped by my former classmate Eric’s show in Long Island City. The show was INSIDE Trevor’s studio where he also hosted a live band. He ordered pizza for us, hungry artists.

After that I ran into him and his work here and there, including the show at Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI):

At EAI opening, I had a chance to talk to the fellow Japanese artist from Hawaii in fluent Japanese (who knew Trevor speaks Japanese!? lol) and learned a bit more about his life in general. Still, I had no idea that he was the former technical director of EAI. His Bio is HERE.
This year, Trevor’s having a solo show in NYC and Philly, so we decided to cover two shows by this mysterious artist at once.
Nice section of the show:
* btw, this was an extremely large painting that covered one of the gallery walls at 47 Canal!
There were a few pieces that were by other artists and things we weren’t sure if that was art. In the office:
Outside the entrance (not sure if this was art...):
Familiar hostel sign that isn’t real (thai restaurant’s deco) - our LES favorite...
End of LES/NYC show review...
Now we’re traveling on train to Philly!
Doggie in a backpack must be a philly thing
Philly Trevor show was on the second floor of ICA Philly:
This image below, I thought he was smoking but was in fact eating Sushi... (right?)
Outside the section was like this:
Karyn Olivier: Everything That’s Alive Moves show on the 1st floor was cool, too.
...especially the cardboard obelisk standing right by the entrance area:

ICA Philly was giving out flowers for visitors to wear as part of the 1st floor show by Karyn Olivier, artist from Trinidad and Tobago:
bye bye philly until next time!
