Speaking of the CMYK options, do you (or anyone else) know exactly how that works? Is it still a Mac only thing? I've tried to mess with that stuff on FA, but I always hit a block in that "CMYK Soft Proof" is always grayed out and unclickable.

So maybe I forgot to share this here, but when the CMYK proofing came out for Firealpaca, the official FA twitter posted this:

If you google, there are several good websites on that and these should work for both Windows and Mac. Either you install the ICC profiles or you have to set one of the RGB profiles as your monitor’s default if you want the color proofing to work in FA and access to the CMYK profiles too. That’s the main reason the “CMYK Soft Proof” is always grayed out.

icc profiles for firealpaca

so i tried testing the color management for firealpaca again when i found out that my monitor basically doesn’t support the CMYK profiles at all, apparently? This is a link for an explanation of ICC Profiles and how to add them to your computer and post production software.

If you are a photographer that understands colour calibration and has painstakingly kept a consistent workflow, you must have an ICC profile for your printer of choice or all your colour work will be unpredictable using that lab. The ICC profiles for the Ajax Costco have been unavailable for the last three years that I have been asking that location to provide the calibration reference to Dry Creek. 

I have a colour vision deficiency and so I needed to learn all I can about controlling colour in my digital workflow. I have calibrated my cameras and scanners. My monitors are re-calibrated monthly. In Lightroom I soft proof with profiles from the Barrie, Ontario location and send my work there when I am planning to travel north and pick them up. I am close to the Ajax location but without the ICC profiles; I could never send any work there.

I know that there will be 325 interested photographers, that is how many Dry Creek Photo will be notifying that these profiles are now available.

I recently attended an excellent presentation by Sports Photographer Dwayne Ducommun at the Ajax Photography Club. Dwayne recommended http://www.phoenixprolabs.com/ in Toronto as his image lab of choice.

What is ICC Profiles?

ICC Profiles describe the properties of colour space. ex. Saturation, Deepest colour of black, Specific shade of blue be it lighter or darker in shades.

The profile is the conduit between the monitor and the output device (printer) If you wanted the colour red, many different printers would perceive the colour red differently, variety between light tints or darker shadows. ICC Profile is the communicator of the colour one imagined specifically and when printed, received the colour exactly as was from the monitor.

Canon Printing Problems...

I'm having real problems with my Canon A3 + printer. The colors are quite the worst colors I've EVER seen! I've always previously used HP printers but chose the Canon as I was advised to do so by so many professional art printers I've lost count. I've tried installing different ICC profiles, no use. I've tried cleaning all the print heads, altering all the color settings manually, and so on. Nothing works. Currently, it's utterly useless. Has anyone else managed to resolve similar probs with a Canon? With HP you can choose 'other speciality papers' when your paper doesn't tally with their options, with Canon, it seems you can't. I've therefore now tried printing directly out of my photoshop editing program which DOES give me more options, but it's ALL still unusable. I could really do with some help! Please!
