[170213] Interview with Cinema Today (One Week Friends PR)

Hello, this time, we translated an interview from Kawaguchi Haruna and Yamazaki Kento when they were promoting One Week Friends. We are trying to find and translate old and new interviews from Haruna-chan as much as possible. 

There are some sentences that are worded awkwardly, and also words that can not be translated perfectly in English. We are very sorry about it as Japanese language is not our first language, but we are trying to give explanation in the end of the text.

Q: This is a story of a special girl whose memories of her friends disappear every week. How did you perceive the roles you played in the film?

Haruna: Kaori is a girl suffering from an illness that she loses her memory in a week, but she has become gradually stronger in her daily life. I was well aware of the change.

Kento: Hase is straightforward, does not know how to give up, and creates his own mood. I decided to play such character with all my strength.

Q: Because of the complex settings, couldn't it be difficult for you to have a relationship where you can't move on with simple emotions?

Kento: It is. I thought that conversation with Haruna-chan was important to create the mood/atmosphere on site. I did not plan much when I was acting, it was realistic. It has been a lot of fun.

Haruna: The changing facial expressions and emotions were very difficult to express, but Hase-kun (played by Kento)'s character saved me at some parts. I think we have built a very good relationship.

Q: You two seem to suit to each other. What are your impressions of each other?

Haruna: He has an incomprehensible charm in a good sense, that's why I'm interested on it. Like Hase-kun, he is a person who is liked by others.

Q: Do you aware of your "つかみどころがない (tsukami dokoro ga nai)*" personality?

Kento: I wonder what it is (bitter smile).

Q: What impression do you have on Kawaguchi-san?

Kento: Haruna-chan has 'untouched' feeling. I thought she was quite similar to me. The feeling of trying to enjoy things is also similar. Also… she's friendly.

Haruna: It's okay. If good words don't come out, don't force yourself (laughs).

Q: Is she the type that 'the more you know her, the more you like her'?

Kento: That's right, like a dried squid. The more you bite, the tastier you're finding it!**

Q: Kawaguchi-san had praised Yamazaki-san who played as Hase-kun.

Haruna: Hase-kun is straightforward. Since Kaori's role was to lose her memory, he might lose himself if he weren't strong. He showed his honest feeling since he felt the other person is very important. Hase-kun is very frank and pure. After watching the preview, it was shown beyond what is depicted in the original work.

Kento: I was really worried because the original work was on going. However, I changed the approach a little, like, I got myself out of the original and imagined if there was such a person in real life. I tried to act with my own feelings without being too caught up in the original character.

Q: Kawaguchi-san has also acted in live-action projects, is there anything you are aware of?

Haruna: Since the movie is closely related to the original, it is a must to be aware of the important parts. Nonetheless, there must be something different when the real person plays it, so I'm trying not to think about it much. If there are 100 fans of the original work, it is impossible for all 100 people to like the live-action as well.

Q: It's been the 10th anniversary of Kawaguchi-san's career in entertainment business, so what do you think has changed when you look back on your previous acting career?

Haruna: I don't know much about the change myself. However, I think that 10 years is a long period of time. I have met various people and I have been influenced little by little by them.

Kento: I was able to do various things, but I realized I like acting the most. I wish I could move people's hearts even a little bit. I would be happy if people could see my works and let me know what they think.

Haruna: Me too. There were a lot of hard times, but I often think that (acting) is what drives me to work hard. There are people who watch my works and when I got various comments I realized I liked this job. I also think it's fun to create one thing with everyone. I want to continue doing it.

Q: Hase-kun is the type who 'makes the mood rather than read the mood'. What about you?

Haruna: I read the mood. I'm very shy, there are times when I do not know how to communicate, so I start by looking around. However, because the teamwork and atmosphere of the film site will be pictured on screen, I try to communicate as much as possible on site.

Kento: I read the mood too. But it depends.

Kawaguchi and Yamazaki described each other as "elusive type". Even during the interview, the addition and intrusive behavior of each comment did not seem to be a conscious attempt, but a natural one. The word "bold/unrestrained" seems to be taken negatively these days, but it's good to see the unrestrain that lies in the relationship of trust. I got that impression in Kawaguchi and Yamazaki's relationship. And because their warmth was reflected in this work, I wondered if people could deeply empathize with the characters, Fujimiya Kaori and Hase Yuuki.

[170219] Interview with Eiga.com (One Week  Friends PR)

A high school girl who only has one week of memories of her friend and a high school boy who continues to express his thoughts. Two young actors, Kawaguchi Haruna and Yamazaki Kento, co-starred for the first time in "One Week Friends". Just as Kawaguchi said, "I didn't feel like I was meeting you for the first time," they teased each other as if they were real classmates, bringing out each other's charms, and showing pure love of high school students.

The two, who agreed that there was nothing separating each other from the first day of shooting, created the same atmosphere that seems to jump out of the screen. Yamazaki is now an essential part of the youth films, to which Kawaguchi said "because he is the prince of all".

Yamazaki showed a shy expression, "I'm not a prince at all, but if that's why some of you are encouraging me, maybe that's the case (laughs)." Obviously, the reason they've been able to open up is due to mutual respect.

Kawaguchi: "(Yamazaki) is very dynamic (メリハリがある* / merihari ga aru). He has a lot of concentration and I got pulled by it. Above all, Kaori-chan was completely influenced by the character Hase-kun, and that was also the case for me."

Yamazaki: "It was really fun at the shooting location, ne. I think that the role of Kaori requires a delicate play. She has to control herself if she want to carry it out properly. It was amusing, fun, and nice (laughs)."

Kawaguchi explained the relationship between Kaori and Yuuki, "It's a really lovey-dovey feeling, however, this movie is full of naivete, it's a 'not a lover but more than friends'-kind of movie. It's a special relationship that is close to family."

At first, Kaori refuses the offer of an exchange diary, but she is moved by Yuuki's enthusiasm and decides to accept it. "At first, she feels like she doesn't want to be associated with people, as if she doesn’t like them. But such a girl will loosen (her facial expression) little by little. I thought that nuances such as awkwardness are really important.”

On the other hand, Yamazaki was dressed up as a "normal" high school student who was as pure and innocent as ever in this movie. Even if he was forgotten every week and treated coldly, Yuuki continued to approach without hesitation. 

"I know these emotions so much, like, the feeling of not giving up and loving for nothing. I think it would be nice to think about others and showing love. It's cool."

This movie is full of heart-throbbing scenes of two clumsy people. As for their pick, Kawaguchi said immediately "Library!", Yamazaki also said, "Library, back hug!". The two people, who were preparing for the school festival, sneak into the library at night for some reason and recalled the memories of the exchange diary.

Kawaguchi: "Talking about the scene in the school at night, will the audience feel doki-doki**? I think it was perfect, like, grabbing hands, I was doing it while thinking I didn't hate it (laughs)"

It's "grabbing" hands rather than "holding" hands. Yuuki's trivial action showed the frustration of the "more than friends, less than a lover" relationship, and it is conveyed in the movie. Kawaguchi said "that's important!".

"There are many moments when two people feel flustered even in a casual situation at school. Like looking at each other in the shoe locker, although it's nothing special, it can be embarrassing. I hope (the audience) get the feeling of "I can't look at the eyes!" or "I know the feeling" when watching it."

Of course, in real life, high school students may be like that. If they can't simply hold hands, they can't suddenly kiss, but they can feel excited by casual things. Kawaguchi's words reflect the realness of "heart-throbbing", which is felt in the relationship of Kaori and Yuuki.
