Is it peace or Justice that Ugandans need right now?
“I wonder if all these peace pledging campaigns are missing the point, or are they intentionally trying to mislead the population? Requesting people to remain peaceful without in turn asking for justice seems some what hypocritical and one sided to me. I feel like these campaigns are tricking people into submission.
If you have read/seen/heard anything about violence in Uganda this election period then you know, in no way has there been any citizen initiated form of violence, it has always been the government and state institution provoking the people. So whom exactly are these campaigns targeting?
It is very clear that with justice the peace will inevitably prevail, why I wonder, is everyone choosing to ignore that fact? Why is everyone putting in such amounts of effort to massage the symptom but paying very little attention to the disease?
Do I want peace? Of I course I do. But aren’t these campaigns asking a different question? Do I want peace at any price? Do I want peace at the expense of my freedom, my human rights and my dignity? I feel like that is what these peace pledging campaigns are preaching. Why is none of them talking about the justice? Why are they trying to trick people into thinking that one could exist without the other?
So NO, I don’t pledge peace alone, #IPledgeJusticeUg - Come the 18th, go and vote, stay and protect your vote. But most importantly, don’t let anyone insult you, don’t let anyone force a ruler on you. Choose your leader and only pledge peace when the justice is served.
