Walking along the Icknield Way, one of Britain's ancient trackways, pre-dating the Roman period. Much later, in the 1130s, Henry of Huntingdon referred to it as one of the 'Four Highways' of England, along with the Fosse Way, Ermine Street, and Watling Street. It runs all the way from Norfolk down to Wiltshire, but I contented myself with just a few miles in Hertfordshire.
