✦ The original images are .webp files, which don't animate on Tumblr. I didn't feel like converting and potentially compressing all of these, so I'll be uploading them to this gallery (that also has Steam and Discord frames in it)

Icon Tutorial: Photopea

Photopea is a free alternative to Photoshop and GIMP. The program runs via their website so there is nothing to install !

I used to take a copy / pasted screencap from this:

Step 1: Cropping and Resizing

First you need to open the website and drag / drop in your screencap.

Now select the crop tool and crop the image to your needs. I did 889px x 889 px. Make sure to hit enter to actually crop the image.

Once you've cropped it, go to Image > Image Size and make it 100px x 100px.

Step 2: Coloring

Now that you've got your 100px x 100px image, we're going to make some basic coloring adjustments. First, select that Background layer and right click, then select duplicate layer. You're going to do this twice.

Now you're going to select the second later and set it to Multiply. Then set the third one to Screen. It should look like this.

Now, to give this little guy some definition, go to Filter > Sharpen > and select Smart Sharpen. Set it to 75%.

Now your icon should look like this:

At this point, select all three layers and go to Layer > Merge Layers and this will combine them into one.

It's time to export your icon ! Go to File > Export As > Export as PNG or JPG, and save your file.

That's all there is to it !

Making icons in Photopea is a great way to save storage space and still get to have great looking icons you made yourself. And because it does all the things you'd need photoshop to do, you can add frames and other embellishments too. This is also a great way to make your own blog aesthetic graphics, but that's another tutorial.
