ICONAUT Workshops / Portland

This weekend we launched our ICONAUT workshop series right here in Portland OR. We had an amazing turnout of folks with great energy and enthusiasm for making icons, including hometown heroes Aaron Draplin and Duane King.

I attended Always with Honor’s ICONAUT workshop yesterday. Each person was assigned a subject for their icon—biology, climatology or oceanography. I pulled oceanography. This is my process. 

I barfed up as many thoughts as possible, tried to draw each thing, combine those things and finally scale back until it began to resemble something useful. By that third row of Post-it notes, I was mostly thinking: If I were in a busy airport, would I be able to recognize what this icon is communicating? 

Ultimately, I think there are signs that this icon could achieve that level of clarity without looking like total garbage. It’s still several steps away, but the potential is there. 

It was superfun exercising my icon muscles for an afternoon. And it was nice to sneak a peek into some pals’ processes.
