Paul Getty Museum Purchased with funds provided by the Photographs Council Suspended in the air by a crane and aircraft-grade cabling in a large Plexiglass bubble, the model Simone D’Aillencourt was photographed by Melvin Sokolsky throughout Paris in February 1963 for Harper’s Bazaar. Futuristic and fantastical, Sokolsky’s bubble was inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights”. Though Sokolsky had seen the painting many years earlier, Bosch’s nude figures suspended in a sphere above a heavenly world were unforgettable to the artist and helped to inspire his equally memorable photographs.
