chinese media are reporting that luhan filed a lawsuit to terminate his contract with sm. we all kind of saw it coming-his health has been in a bad way for a long time.

Even though Mulan is Chinese, I don't see why Shin Hye couldn't be used as her? I mean, there are tons of fc's floating around that are being played with a different ethnicity :/ like, jamie chung is often used as a chinese character too

Because it's offensive each and every time that's done. No matter who "perfect" the FC is, they can't be the character if they're not the same ethnicity. It's just as offensive that Jamie Chung is used to play Mulan. Just because it's done on TV or everyone else does it doesn't make it okay. 

When you use a Korean actress to play a Chinese character, you're saying that all Asians look basically the same, so it doesn't matter if you use the right kind. Just like if you use a Puerto Rican actor to play a Mexican character, you're saying that all Latinos are the same and it's not important to learn the difference and respect their cutlures. This is offensive because the countries have been populated by different, ethnically separate peoples with different histories and cultures that deserve to be represented by  people of those ethnicities.

I know it might seem trivial if it's not something you've had to deal with but representation is really important. If you don't have representation or accurate representation, you start to think that you're not important or other people's cultures are more important than your own. You start to feel bad about being who you are just because of your ethnicity, through no fault of your own. There's a beautiful quote by Gabourey Sidibe that kind of sums it up: "If I see myself on screen then I know I exist". If you don't see yourself in movies or tv or books or, yes, even rps, your identity is marginalized.
