After her father's passing, Christine believed she had her life in order. She was pursuing a vocal performance degree, she dutifully attended therapy, and she lived with her best friend. Things were not necessarily easy, but they were manageable.

Then she does not make the cut for a private vocal tutor, and her world tilts on its axis. Her dreams of singing are all but dashed until she receives a mysterious email from someone offering to be her tutor.

What could possibly go wrong for an aspiring singer who has crippling stage fright and zero sense of self preservation?

Went and saw a production of The Magic Flute with @subtlybrilliant and others today. All I could think of was writing a date scene for Erik and Christine in the Idee Fixe universe and how Erik would have a box and believe that Christine could sing the Queen of the Night aria from Act 2.

Something about April always brings me back to Phantom of the Opera. Idee Fixe updates may be imminent.

Idée Fixe - Chapter 9 - NOW ON AO3!

This story has been raging 24/7 in my brain the past week. I've got the first Erik POV companion piece in there, as well as some middle chapters that became clear to me over the last few days.

That being said, this chapter fought me a bit and I ended up splitting it because I'm a wordy bitch (and I once heard that more frequent updates were preferred...and also I love the serotonin from comments so...YOLO).

CHAPTER PREVIEW:

The end of the semester approached in a flurry of French translations, finals, and fragmented sleep schedules. Christine was so consumed by her continued translation of the Carmen aria she barely acknowledged the passage of time. The only thing that kept her temporally anchored were her lessons; on the days when she saw Erik she at least knew it was either Tuesday or Friday. Soon the last week of classes arrived. An anxious energy permeated the campus, and the music building was no different. Dr. Meyers’ vocal class was rowdier than usual before class commenced, but there was not much to discuss regarding the class’s final exam. Those who had been assigned a private instructor had their own final assignments while the rest of the class would suffer a written exam the following week. Christine was not in the least bit worried about it, though she still planned to study.  As the last class of the semester was dismissed, Christine shouldered her bag and was making towards the classroom exit as usual when Dr. Meyers called her name.  “Christine. A word, please, before you leave.”

4. Where do you find inspiration for new ideas? - Great question! Inspiration strikes me in the weirdest way. Could be from a song lyric that I associate with certain characters, or perhaps a line from canon that goes unanswered. Most the time a plot bunny finds me then puts me in a choke hold until I at least scribble down the story idea in my writing notebook.

17. What do you do when writing becomes difficult? (maybe a lack of inspiration or writers block) - I keep writing, even if it's in my head. I rarely ever STOP thinking about my WIPs or blorbos, so even if there aren't active updates on stories, I'm still rotating at least one of them in my head at all times. That way when time/energy/will align and I can actually sit down and write, I am ready to go. The barrel is always loaded, so to speak.

39. Share a snippet from a WIP - I know you probably want an Idee Fixe snippet, but sadly the start of that next chapter is still in my brain. So have a VERY RARE DEMON INK snippet (written April of this year for the next chapter) instead! :)

Lan Wangji would not consider himself particularly fond of children. Unlike his brother, who found toddlers charming and entertaining, Lan Wangji found their constant stickiness and nonsensical rambling disgusting and disorientating. A-Yuan was the one exception to his rules about interacting with children. Lan Wangji strongly suspected it was because he thought A-Yuan was adorable and incredibly intelligent. The fact that Lan Wangji was dating A-Yuan’s father only impacted his judgement slightly.  Babies, however, were a whole new experience.  Lan Wangji had always considered them fragile and unreadable, as though the only way to decode their singular screams was to share their bloodline as a parent. He never thought he would see the appeal, let alone desire to have one of his own.  His mind started to change when he saw Wei Wuxian hold Jin Ling for the first time.

70. When asked, are you embarrassed or enthusiastic to tell people that you write? - Neither, because I never get asked lol I mention I write as a hobby in the real world but people seldom care enough to ask about what.
