Hey everyone, I decided to start up this blog for identifying duck breeds, if you see a duck and would like it identified you can @ me to the specific post and I’ll do my best.

The two ducks in my profile picture and banner are my own little baby darlings, they’re Black East Indies, the front one of these is Midnight, the back one Twilight:

Crested Ducks!

Where possible I’d like to introduce people to breeds of duck that are less well known to the average person, the crested duck may not be as uncommon as black east indies but they also aren’t extremely common and will sometimes raise eyebrows:

That little tuft on the back of their head is natural, that’s how it grows! Personally I’m not as much of a fan of crested ducks as non-crested but I figure at least some people here will appreciate them. There are actually multiple crested breeds, the “crested duck” is the most common, but there’s also the “miniature crested duck” (which is basically the same except smaller). Although not always crested it’s also possible to come across crested silver appleyards and a few other breeds too.

Since I would like to post here regularly and I'm not currently getting many asks (yes, please ask me about ducks!), I thought I'd try and make posts about ducks breeds every now and then, starting with this one.

The Rouen duck is the domesticated breed that most resembles the undomesticated mallard, the primary difference that they're a lot heavier. You can still clearly distinguish the patterns that are present on the undomesticated Mallard:
