Identity - Research Exercise
My image, chosen from Sportswear International, implies that women should “feel free”. The image in the advert can be interpreted in two ways. One of those is that this woman is in fact not free and that she is being restricted by the male in the photo, indicated by the fact that he has a hold of her wrist. Due to this, the statement “feels free” could be seen to be being used as a juxtaposition. Despite this point, the female looks quite relaxed, and additionally is holding onto the male, leading me to believe that this is not the case. Despite this female not being seemingly threatened the message of the advert is the same - all women should not feel confined or controlled by their partner.
The piece can be seen to be being used as both an advert for Tencel, as well as a way to support women and convey the message that it is unnatural to feel trapped or at risk in a relationship, hence the use of ‘naturally’.
