Mate, what are you even doing?
Female Hierodula membrenacea that moulted a couple of weeks ago. She ended up with one of her forewings a bit crumpled, not much, but it meant they couldn’t fold over one-another.
Looked at her just now, and while I did throw a locust in with her last night, she ate that pretty quickly (plus I doubt one would get this far if it tried to take a bite out of her)...looks like she’s gotten fed up with the wonky wing and decided to perform a bit of amateur surgery maybe? Mantids are known for eating damaged legs etc, though they can’t regrow anything after their final moult obviously.
Or who knows why mantids do anything? They’re...not good at think.
Interestingly though, had a whole discussion on facebook with some people recently about trimming messed up wings on a mantis. Personally I’m against it (wings have blood flow and nerves in them), but I guess if the mantis decides to cut them, that’s their business.
