WIJ Day 27
Hope
"60, 61, 62..." Kai muttered to themself under their breath, their hands out to the side as they walked down the train. "63. There we go."
The container was directly attached to the train, two large metal boxes lifted by a crane and stacked right on top of each other and the only questions anymore asked was for the paperwork. It was never meant to have people inside, Kai wasn't sure what was inside, probably some sort of machinery, but that didn't matter, as long as there was enough space for a couple of people to hide for a few days. The containers were locked with a heavy bolt and padlock. It was dangerous; if they couldn't come to pick up the refugees, they would be stuck inside for days, weeks even. They always prepared for a longer trip than expected, but they didn't want to think about the odds if they or their backup down the line couldn't come pick them up.
The lock was a familiar one, heavy and thick but without any anti-picking features. Probably just machinery or raw materials, then. The weapons shipments always had better security. They made quick work of picking it open even in the cold, familiar with the way the pins tensioned and caught before everything gave way and the bolt slid out.
"Take a walk with me, let's get some fresh air," They opened the door a crack and called out the phrase that meant it was safe for the escaping rebels to come out. They knew they weren't the first person to trust for many of the people that they were helping, and there was always a chance that they were being tailed, but at least hearing the phrase that they've been told to memorize because it meant safety had to be more reassuring than a light shining straight in their face and barked orders.
There was a groan before the noise of metal clanging, and they saw two figures clambering out of the dark, clutching blankets wrapped around themselves. They turned on their flashlight, keeping it pointed down at the cluttered ground so they could see as they came out.
"We're here?" The girl asked. She looked like she was supposed to be in high school. She had an arm wrapped around her brother, a boy who was maybe eleven or twelve, but there was a tiredness between his eyes that Kai had seen too often in their country. They didn't want to ask about their parents.
"Yeah," they nodded, holding the kid's hands to help them out of the container, shining their light inside to make sure they haven't left anything behind before locking the doors again. "I'm sure you've been told this already, but I'll go through it again with you. There's water and a change of clothes in this bag, and here's the map," They showed them the inside of the bag, pulling out a map and unfolding it. "Here's the bus ticket, and the station is right over there, just across the street. No connections, just take it four stops, and the safehouse should be pretty easy to find once you get off. Use the map and the pictures. There's new IDs for you, they should stand up if you need them but I'll come visit in a day or two to sort out the pictures. If I can't, I'll send someone else. Same code phrase."
"Slow down," The girl laughed and interrupted Kai once they made it outside the trainyard with its heavy atmosphere filled with the smell of diesel. "Come on, this is the first time I've felt hope about my future instead of fear about when I'll be killed. Lemme just... take it in."
“Yeah, of course," Kai looked down, kicking at the rocks on the sidewalk. They weren't sure if they've ever really felt hope. They couldn't remember the last time there were any good possibilities in their future to look forward to. She was right though, at least now they didn't have to worry about being killed if their lies break apart. Looking over at the girl with the city lights reflected in her eyes, Kai smiled. They couldn't tell her that for some, even being out of the country didn't mean safety. This was enough. Being someplace new, with a new identity and new opportunities but the same old friends that were always looking out for you. That was the spark of hope for those that they help, and all they had to do was to keep that spark safe.
pockets your animal camp!!!
(YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL CAMP OMG I LOVE IT)
:D
(also i hope you don't mind me visiting your camp)
These photos make me very melancholy and nostalgic because Arthur looks so, so well in the spotlight. It feels like he was born to be totally dazzled by this white light which shines only to outline his frame; he was born to stand on a stage holding his journal, finding his voice and spreading joy and laughter in the world. He was born to wear a red suit and make people laugh talking about the things he loves. He deserved to make his dream come true and it makes me so sad that no one has ever given him the chance to be happy
