Happy International Day of Light!
Today is the first International Day of Light, organised by UNESCO as an annual day to appreciate light and the roles in plays in science, art, and culture! The broad theme is to let people from every part of society contribute in some way.
May 16th was chosen as the date, because it’s the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser, constructed by Theodore Maiman in 1960. Since their inception in theoretical science, lasers have gone on to have a huge impact on society, in areas as diverse as medicine, entertainment, engineering, and communication.
The International Day of Light is about peace and equality, and is all about promoting several things, including:
The role of light and light based technologies in our lives, both present and future
The link light has with art and culture
Education for everyone, everywhere, with a focus on developing countries
The importance of fundamental research in science and technology involving light, and promoting careers in these fields
Using lighting and energy technology to improve quality of life for people in the developing world
Awareness of energy efficiency and how to limit wasted energy and light pollution to preserve dark skies
My friends, the future is bright and sustainable! ☀️
