HOW FAR THE KNOWLEDGE OF CORRECT SPELLING IS IMPORTANT IN IELTS LISTENING TEST
Since the IELTS listening test is an audio based test, the answers of the questions can only be heard, it will never appear in a written format. The different between the reading and listening modules of the IELTS test is that the presence of a passage in a typed document helps the students to minimise spelling errors in the reading module. In case of a reading test, the students are already aware that the answer of the questions will stay hidden in the printed passages only. Thus the sole thing they have to do is to identify the answers. They should not be worried about the spelling of the answers because at any time they can cross check the spelling from the passages. However, in case of the listening test, the students are deprived of this facility. They can only hear the answers in the form of an audio and at once they have to write that down in the question paper.
One renowned IELTS training institute in Kolkata once suggested its students to follow certain effective steps so that they can avoid the nightmare of doing spelling errors. The institute suggests:
· In case of a question where the name of the speaker is the answer, it is a common practice that the speaker will repeat his/her name by spelling it letter wise. For example, the speaker will say “My name is Gregory. It is G-R-E-G-O-R-Y”.
· In case, the audio contains a speech of a speaker who is speaking in French, the student should render a cautious ear to certain similar sounding words like M and N, B and V.
· If the answer of a question is a number series (Like mobile number), it is always ideal to start copying the numbers once the speaker starts saying it. Otherwise memorising the numbers and then copying it after the finishing of the speech might prove to be risky.
