Original Characters are a little hard to make. Making them decent is hard too. Now, most people would say that since it's their character, that they can do whatever they want with them, that is true, when in private. When you put your character out into the world, you should put effort into making it memorable yet realistic to the fandom you are placing it in. Here are some tips to make the character a bit more memorable and realistic.
Tattoos And Piercings: Though they are fun to play with, you have to remember how painful and time and money consuming getting a tattoo is. It can cost upwards of 150 dollars to get a tattoo, it's painful to get in many places where it is most popular to get them like the hands, pubic bones and back, not to mention the fact that it is permanent and even more painful to get rid of. Laser Treatments and cover-ups can cost more than the tattoo itself. And a teenager, 14-17 years old cannot get a tattoo. It's illegal and in all honesty stupid. How many 17-year-Olds in high school do you see with gigantic tattoos on their hands and pubic bones? Piercings are a different story, however. I don’t mind extreme Piercings as much as the average person does, I just hate the typical ones. What about the collarbone? Or a knuckle. Still, I don’t mind them.
Age: this one is oozy. Most Original Characters are between the ages of 16-21 years old. Sometimes their with characters who in canon are 26 and up. It's weird that a law-abiding adult would get with a teen just out of high school. Now, if this is part of the storyline of the romance, how it is forbidden and wrong then sure. Maybe. It has to be done intricately. And you shouldn’t be afraid of making your character 30 or so. It's not bad to be over 27 years old. Of course, it's a little hard to make it work, but it's not a bad thing.
Main Character Changing/ Cannon Manipulating: I hate this. Like, a lot. I see this the most with Voltron. Giving your character a lion that does not exist. Purple, Pink, even white and that one is a REAL HEADCANON. That is so...frustrating. The theme of Voltron is that each part has a purpose and everyone has a use, meaning togetherness and perfect sync. It's like the adult swim Voltron short with the pink lion. Look it up and you’ll get how ridiculous it is to have an extra lion that doesn’t need to be there. It would be cool if your character from the future. Or has a battling bond with one of the lions. But don’t pick a color and make up a lion. It's dumb. This goes for all anime. Gurren Lagann, Any Magical Girls ETC. (I see this most with Voltron. No one needs you pink, purple, orange, Grey and white lion.)
Siblings: Sigh...if a character is an only child...their an only child. Keyword ONLY. That is part of their character. Who they are. That would change the way they act MAJORLY. They would become more caring. More sympathetic. If they have siblings, leave it at that. Its different with, For example, the Sakamaki Brothers in DL.
But make it a brother….not a sister.
