It had been a while since the Doctor had visited Storybrooke. It was a fascinating place, with fascinating people, but his prime reason for visiting today had been to see the face of NurseJordanagain. In the midst of his initial confusion in finding himself in Storybrooke, the nurse had treated him with extraordinary kindness (while being convinced he was a loony, but still), and the Doctor was not prone to forgetting those who showed any sort of compassion towards him. He’d even gone so far as to bring the lovely woman a trinket from another planet – a golden miniature statue of a woman in long, flowing robes, bearing an orb of light (quite literally) in her carefully sculpted hands.
Not much time had passed before the Doctor found the hospital, but in asking for NurseJordan, he was met with awkward silence.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” the Time Lord caught himself cheerfully. “I’m not anyone fishy. You must think I’m someone fishy. No, no, I’m an old friend of NurseJordan’s. You can call her out if you like. She’ll recognise me.”
He beamed at the young woman in NurseJordan’s place, but she only frowned at him.
“I’m sorry, sir,” she explained, “but Nurse Jordan died only a few days ago. She’s been ill for quite some time. Didn’t you know?”
Didn’t you know? If it wasn’t enough to be shocked by the news, the Doctor was stung by those words. No, of course he hadn’t known. He never stopped to catch up with his friends. He never really knew what was happening in their lives. Of course he hadn’t known NurseJordan had been fatally ill. He’d been too caught up in his own adventures.
“Thank you,” he said slowly, quietly, before turning to walk out of the hospital. The statue remained clasped tightly in his hands, now with no-one left to receive it. The Doctor walked for a long while alone, lost in his own thoughts.
It was peculiar to think that Nurse Jordan could have been any one of his friends. She could’ve been Martha Jones, or Jack Harkness, or Mickey Smith, or Sarah Jane. Even Rose Tyler in her parallel universe. The Doctor would never know if they were sick or dying, or even already dead, because he was too proud and old and tired to visit them. Because he was a Time Lord, and they were so very very human.
When he stepped back into the TARDIS, the Doctor thought Storybrooke looked a little more drab than it had the last time he’d said goodbye to it, as if Nurse Jordan had unwittingly taken the sunlight with her on the day of her death. He would never have the opportunity to thank her again.
