hi in your opinion is playing a lavellan integral to enjoying the dai experience? asking because i just finished the game with an adaar and enjoyed it significantly less than the other two, i never really felt immersed in the story or my character. ive been wondering if replaying as an elf would make things better, but im not sure
hi!<3 tbh i think part of this is attributable to the game itself - inquisition is generally less immersive than origins or 2, and it’s harder to build a well-defined protagonist in the third game without relying on aggressive headcanon. some of what you’re experiencing might just be a consequence of the flaws of the game rather than the origin specifically, though i do think you had the bad luck to pick an origin that’s underwritten compared to the others.
by default, the game assumes that you’re a human noble, and in that sense, playing an andrastian non-mage rich person is the easiest way to avoid any dialogues that don’t make sense in context (the non-humans all have a few of these). in terms of which inquisitor has the most interesting story by implication, though, i do think it’s lavellan.
i don’t want to spoil the dlcs for you if you haven’t played them, but two of the three have substantial relevance to elves - their position in most thedan societies, their faiths, and the way their histories are appropriated and altered to fuel the processes of human nation-building and territorial expansion. there’s some good stuff in there, and it’s not ONLY good if you’re piloting an elf, but if you are, you may get more of an “oh shit! that’s me!” feeling out of it. the mc has a reason to care about both the evanuris and shartan. a couple of the romances (sera’s in particular) take on a different connotation with an elf. solas is an inconsistent freak for his own reasons, but i think you find out a little more about his complexes if you’re getting the lines he’ll only say to a fellow elf - your conversation after the destruction of haven is a good character moment for you both, imo. and so on.
basically i don’t think it’s integral, but for me, i think it helped me get into a character that otherwise seemed vague and nebulous in both their personality and their motives. it’s a variety of small details that contributed to a greater investment in the game… but i can totally picture someone replaying this game as an elf and being like “wow, it’s same. fuck this i’m gonna go start another brosca”
