Red Banks, Kangaroo Island, seen from the beach. These rugged cliffs stand between ten to twenty meters tall, stretching along the coast for about ten kilometers. They glow fiercely in the setting sun, creating an unforgettable vista. Remarkable Rocks on Kangaroo Island (so aptly named!) are awesome even an overcast day. I was hoping for some golden hour photos, but the weather didn’t care about my carefully laid plans. Having been handed lemons, so to say, I went for a dramatic look and I’m pretty pleased with the result, if I may sound my own trumpet 😁. Signs of the devastating 2019/2020 bush fires can still be seen everywhere in the Flinders Chase National Park on Kangaroo Island. I was prepared for such a sight, and worse, but I was awed by the resilience of nature. The burned tree skeletons are still there, raising their ghostly arms to the sky, but they are immersed in lush green vegetation. Bushes and scrubs have sprouted up, competing in greenness and flowers.   We had left Kangaroo Island at the end of December 2019, a few days before the ferry traffic was stopped and the fires that were to consume half of the island ran wild. I feared the worst and was so apprehensive when returning to Kangaroo Island that Flinders Chase wouldn’t be the magical place we came to know and love. But I was wrong and couldn’t be happier to be proven wrong! Nature is resilient and bounced back, and the park is still an awesome place to visit. Remarkable Rocks on Kangaroo Island are remarkable, indeed. Shaped by millions of years of erosion, they still stand tall only to be eaten away by the golden orange lichen, a few millimeters a year. The lichen lives on rainwater and the minerals in the rocks, and loan that orange hue to the stone. Ecopia Retreat, our home away from home here on Kangaroo Island. Tucked in undisturbed native vegetation, the villa was built in the natural environment without any ground clearance. A luxurious yet eco-friendly place totally off-grid, using solar power and rainwater, situated in the middle of private wildlife sanctuary. Right up our alley!   This is our second stay at Ecopia and hopefully not the last! Yael and Rob, the owners, have created a wildlife heaven on 150 acres, planting shrubs and trees to support the many animals and birds in the area, especially the endangered glossy black cockatoos. We went there to be completely immersed in nature and watch the wildlife and boy, did Ecopia deliver!   We’ve found the black cockatoos in the area Yeal told us about, a happy family of three. We’ve found kangaroos, of course (we’re on Kangaroo Island, after all). We’ve found koalas, and echidnas, goannas, eagles, and fairy wrens, and … many, many more animals and birds.
