Aquilo - 'Human' EP
The digital era has made it easier than ever to produce, record and release music. However this has caused for an overcrowded industry - with an abundance of music readily available to listen to, it can be tricky to get your music heard. For that very reason it has forced the modern music artists to become even more creative with their output, in order to enhance their chances of getting noticed. Lancashire duo Aquilo have thought of an innovative way to give life and meaning to music videos. Director Eoin Glaister has got on board with the project and directed a two-part mini drama to run alongside the release of the bands latest EP ‘Human’.
Part one features the second track from the EP, ‘I Gave It All. The pair from Silverdale have built up a reputation in a short space of time based on their strong production. However it’s the heartfelt vocals coupled with the lyrics which really stand out on ‘Gave It All’. The accompanying video explores the tales of young love, which portrays the theme of the song very accurately. Seen through the eyes of a girl who is at a headlock, as she outgrows the relationship with her best friend and steps up new relations with an older, more enticing boy. As the track title suggests, the girl is faced with the troubles of growing up and overcoming the pressure of engaging in sexual relations. Director Eoin Glaister describes it as “a coming-of-age story about the loss of innocence”.
The second and final part is for the beautiful track, ‘Losing You’, which is the closing song from new EP. The video follows on from the last and depicts the samejourney of young love and lost, although is perhaps more poignant than the previous. The story is seen from the perspective of the younger boy, whereas before we saw i through the eyes of the main love interest, it is soon clear to see that the two are facing different struggles. We see the boy experiencing mixed emotions as he watches his best friend fall into the arms of another guy, who happens to be his older brother. No matter how desperately hard he tries, the situation is out of his control, which leads to the eventual loss of his friend.
The remaining two songs from the EP follow down the same path as ‘I Gave It All’ & ‘Losing You’. A slow build up of string-heavy production which is capable of clawing its way in to pull at your heart strings. The duo managed to enlist in-demand producer and multi-instrumentalist SOHN for production duties in title track ‘Human’. SOHN’s input is very recognisable, with the tempo chopping and changing frequently. This is a trademark that can be heard in his own material regularly. In retrospect, this isn’t the first time an artist has created something of this nature. However there have been few who have managed to convey the songs themes as a video narrative in such a moving and emotive way.
